Willamette community mingles with new university president

New Willamette University President Steve Thorsett and his wife, Rachel Dewey Thorsett, met with the campus community Monday at an informal social on the north lawn near the rose garden.

Faculty, administrators, staff and a few students who are on campus this summer greeted the Thorsetts warmly as they shared strawberry shortcake.

Thorsett began his position as Willamette’s 23rd president on July 1. He came to Willamette from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was dean of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences.

The social was one of the first of many times in the coming months that Thorsett plans to meet and learn from members of the Willamette community.
