by University Communications,

Symeon Symeonides, the Alex L. Parks Distinguished Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus of Willamette's College of Law, has been awarded an honorary Ph.D. in the Social and Pedagogical Sciences by the University of Cyprus at a special ceremony held in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The award, presented in March, cites Symeonides’ path-breaking scholarly work, which includes 24 books and more than 100 articles in seven languages, and his rich legislative work in three states, several foreign countries, the European Union, and the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The award also praises Symeonides’ efforts to provide a bridge between American and European private international law.

This is the third doctoral degree awarded to Symeonides. The first was an earned S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science) awarded by the Harvard Law School and the second an honorary LL.D. (Doctor of Laws) awarded by the University of Thessaloniki, in Greece.
