Two Willamette University seniors were selected for paid, 10-week reporting internships in Oregon this summer.

Zane Sparling and Emily Hoard, both longtime reporters with The Willamette Collegian student newspaper, were among the 17 winners of the statewide journalism competition. This year, 64 college students applied.

Sparling will intern at the Capital Press in Salem, while Hoard will intern at the News-Register in McMinnville.

“I’d like to remain in journalism, so this aligns with my career goals,” Hoard says. “I hope to gain more writing experience and learn more about journalism.”

Sparling, who is majoring in English and Russian, is co-editor of The Collegian this year. Both he and Hoard interned with the their hometown newspaper, the Lake Oswego Review, two summers ago. Hoard, an English major, has worked as a staff writer for The Willamette Collegian for a year and a half.

Each of the interns will receive stipends totaling $5,100, awarded by his or her sponsoring news organization and the Charles Snowden Journalism Internship Program at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication.
