Willamette residence halls to close during winter break

by Jennifer Johnson,

Dates, times and arrangements for students to keep in mind.

Willamette students are one week away from relaxing during the long winter break.

Before you leave campus, here are a few things to know:

Residence halls, apartments and rooms

All residence halls are closed from noon Dec. 18 until Jan. 14, and students need to leave campus within 24 hours of their last final. They’re also expected to prepare their room for their absence, including recruiting off-campus caretakers for plants and fish. Students will be charged if a university staff member has to dispose of any trash. View more details here.

Residence advisors will inventory the rooms of departing American Studies Program students Dec. 16, and those students leave by Dec. 17.

Campus offices close Dec. 23 and reopen at 8 a.m. Jan. 3, 2017. Housing and Community Life will also be open noon-5 p.m. Jan. 14–15. For any housing-related questions, email housing@willamette.edu.

Residence halls — with the exception of University Apartments, Kaneko Apartments and the first floor of Doney north — cannot be accessed over break.

Students who are not returning to Willamette must make an appointment with their residence advisor and turn in their key by noon Dec. 18. If students have been approved by their area coordinator to move to another room or apartment, they must turn in their key and put their belongings in storage by the same deadline.

University staff members will be entering student rooms and apartments during break to complete requested work orders or respond to emergencies.

Finals week food

For students who have Saturday finals, Kaneko Café will serve a special dinner from 5–7:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Goudy will hold a brunch Dec. 17 before closing until dinner on Jan. 15, 2017.

Parking

Willamette is easing parking rules during finals week. Otherwise restricted lots will allow students a maximum of 15 minutes to load their vehicles. Parking on the grass or landscaped areas is not allowed. For more information, contact Campus Safety at 503-370-6911.

Shuttles

Associated Students of Willamette University (ASWU) is running shuttles to Portland International Airport Dec. 16–18. Shuttle departure times were determined by a student-body survey. A separate survey to establish times for returning shuttles will be sent to students at the end of the semester.

ASWU recommends students sign-up ahead of time to guarantee their spot, but they can also show up on the day of departure to see if seats are still available. Sign-up here. Any questions can be sent to shuttle coordinator Allison Davies abdavies@willamette.edu.
