Renewal requirements for each type of funding are listed below.

Willamette Scholarships will be automatically renewed each academic year provided that the student maintains Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (FA SAP, see details below). If a student has been awarded a scholarship that has more strict requirements than those listed below, the student will be explicitly advised of those requirements, in writing. Scholarships are available for a maximum of eight semesters, or until the student's graduation requirements are completed, whichever comes first.

Grants (including Federal Pell Grant, Federal SEO Grant, Oregon Opportunity Grant, and Willamette University Grant) require that the student 1) file the FAFSA each year, and 2) maintain FA SAP as described below. Willamette University Grants are available for a maximum of 9 semesters, or until the student's graduation requirements are completed, whichever comes first; Federal Grants are available for a maximum of 12 semesters, or until the student's graduation requirements are completed, whichever comes first; and Oregon Opportunity Grant is available for a maximum of 8 semesters, or until the student's graduation requirements are completed, whichever comes first.

Loans (including Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, Federal Perkins Loans, and Federal Parent (PLUS) Loans) require that the student 1) file the FAFSA each year, and 2) maintain FA SAP as described below. Federal loans are available for a maximum of 12 semesters, or until the student's graduation requirements are completed, whichever comes first, provided the student does not exceed the aggregate loan amount maximums established by the federal government.

Federal Work Study requires that the student 1) file the FAFSA each year, and 2) maintain FA SAP as described below. Federal work Study is available for a maximum of 12 semesters, or until the student's graduation requirements are completed, whichever comes first.

Award Renewal Amounts

In general, students can assume that the amounts of their financial aid awards will remain the same each year. However, award amounts can change in certain circumstances:

Funds that are based on the FAFSA information can be affected by changes in family’s financial situation, number in college, or parents' marital status. Also, if students fail to meet the published priority deadline for filing the FAFSA, they could lose eligibility for some or all of their FAFSA-based awards. Federal and state funds can be affected by changes in the regulations governing those awards.

Scholarships (which are not based on the FAFSA) can be affected by a student’s failure to meet Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress, by not graduating within the maximum timeframe allowed per fund, or by not maintaining the minimum cumulative GPA.

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (FA SAP)

To maintain FA SAP students must meet the following requirements:

Total Earned credits. Students must be able to complete their degree requirements within the maximum timeframe of aid eligibility allowed by the University (9 semesters for institutional aid, 12 semesters for federal aid.) This is measured as follows:

  • 14 credits completed by the end of the first year (2nd semester)
  • 26 credits completed by the end of the 3rd semester
  • 42 credits by the end of the second year (4th semester)
  • 58 credits by the end of the 5th semester
  • 74 credits by the end of the third year (6th semester)
  • 90 credits by the end of the 7th semester
  • 106 credits completed by the end of the fourth year (8th semester)

Cumulative GPA. 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Maximum Timeframe. Federal aid is available for a maximum of 12 semesters, Willamette University Grants and the Jason Lee Award are available for a maximum of 9 semesters, and Willamette University Scholarships and the Oregon Opportunity Grant are available for a maximum of 8 semesters.
