Course and Program Information

Program Requirements-IDS 205

  • Apply to the program and once accepted register for the course (IDS-205)*

  • Tutor one evening per week (3 hours)
  • Attend Partnership events and coordinated campus based events for Chemawa youth

IDS-205

Chemawa Indian School Partnership Program (1/2 credit)

The Program brings Willamette University undergraduates to the Chemawa campus during the Evening Tutorial, Chemawa's defined study period, Monday through Thursday. Willamette students work together with Chemawa staff and Peer Tutors to meet student needs. Tutoring covers basic subject areas such as language arts, math, science, and social studies. There is often a great need for tutors who are skilled in advanced math (Geometry, Algebra II) and science (Biology, Physics). An important dimension of the Partnership Program is the informal mentoring and relationship-building that grows from the interaction between Chemawa and Willamette students. While academic development is stressed, equally important is the development of mutual understanding and appreciation of peoples and cultures. Participants also host Chemawa students on the Willamette campus for various events and collaborations, including Indian Country Conversations presentations, MLK Celebrations, college visits, AVID day and sports games.  

Willamette students who participate in this program explore teaching, mentoring, and personal development in addition to historical and contemporary issues within Indian Country. IDS 205 also serves as the pre-requisite to IDS 396 Chemawa Indian School Partnership Program Internship. Many alumni of the program have gone on to teach in programs such as City Year, Teach for America, and the Peace Corps. Alumni have also participated in alternative education programs and have enrolled in Masters of Teaching/Education programs.

Program Requirements-IDS 396

  • Ability to commit 6 hrs. a week (0.5 credit) or 12 hrs. a week (1.0 credit) which would include On-site support to an AVID teacher or another educational setting, weekly logs, and the selected semester's major project.  Possible other duties may include: planning/coordinating guest speakers, field trips, and service activities. 
  • Dependable transportation to and from Chemawa Indian School
  • Completion of a Federal Security Clearance (previous CISPP Tutors are cleared for 5 years)
  • At least one semester of successful experience serving as a tutor for the CISPP
  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior standing
  • If conducting research, must receive approval from Willamette's IRB and submit IRB proposal to the Chemawa Indian School administration and classroom teacher for review.
  • Plan one major project for the semester: AVID Day, major field trip, Club information, etc.
  • A weekly log and a final report are required
  • Ability to structure your schedule such that you receive at least 0.5 credits for the Internship experience
  • Submit an application and letter of interest and once accepted register for course (IDS-396)

IDS-396

Chemawa Indian School Partnership Program Internship (.5 or 1 credit)

  • Prerequisite: IDS 205
  • Offering: Every Semester
  • Instructor: TBA

This internship is designed for students who have prior experience with the Willamette University Chemawa Indian School Partnership Program and desire to have a more significant involvement with the Partnership. Specific internship placements at Chemawa may vary; examples include placement as AVID interns in Chemawa classrooms or as interns that support other elements of the Partnership such as the nightly tutorial program or the college readiness program. Interns gain an opportunity to demonstrate and explore commitment to service, educational equity, and personal growth through engagement while impacting the lives of Chemawa students through relationship guided instruction and mentoring.
