Angers, France

Angers, located in the western portion of the Loire Valley, has been described by many as a “bright and radiant city.” There are almost 30,000 university students in Angers, which makes it a wonderful place to study, socialize and experience different cultures. The Loire Valley is noted for the quality of its language, it is said that the purest form of French is spoken there. Students attend classes at the Centre International d’Etudes Françaises (CIDEF) associated with the campus of the Université Catholique de l’Ouest (UCO), located in downtown Angers. Most classes at CIDEF will be taken with other non-native speakers - U.S. and other international students.

This program is available to students with any level of French language abilities. Students at all language levels should take a French course the semester prior to studying abroad. Willamette sends students to Angers via two programs: GEO French Immersion in Angers and a direct exchange with UCO.

GEO Angers Fall/Spring Semester: Most students taking courses in French language and culture at CIDEF participate in the program through Global Education Oregon (GEO). Beginner (Initiation) and Elementary (Éleméntaire) students enroll in 17-21 hours per week of French language coursework, depending on placement. Intermediate and Advanced students enroll in 9-12 hours of French language coursework per week, and up to 9-12 additional hours per week (three to four courses) of content courses in the humanities and social sciences. Courses are taken at CIDEF and students live with French families in a homestay.

Direct exchange with UCO: One or two spots each year may be available as direct exchange placements for qualified students with strong French language skills. Students on exchange will take regular university courses alongside French students in a wide range of fields in the arts, social sciences, humanities and sciences. Students receive support services from across the university as local students do. Additional support is provided by the International Office at UCO. Talk with an OIE advisor about this possibility.
