Overview
Study intensive Russian language and culture in the immersive environment of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. In 1990, SRAS began working with Moscow State University to further develop and promote several of their study abroad programs. SRAS expanded soon after, developing and promoting programs across Eurasia that maximize what the institution and location can offer students of a wide range of subjects. Minimum GPA required by host program: 2.5 GPA.

Students will study in Russian as a Second Language program which focuses on language and culture coursework. Russian language courses are offered at six different levels, from beginning to advanced with class sizes kept small. For more information, see SRAS's course outlines for each language level: beginning (100), intermediate (200), and advanced (300). If you are at an intermediate level, you can replace some of the foundation courses with Russian language electives or other Central Asian language electives. Instruction takes place at the London School of Languages and Cultures, a private language school which has worked with the UNDP, the US Embassy, and various USAID projects. They offer an extensive library, 30+ modern classrooms, and international staff from across Central Asia.
Excursions, seminars, and other out-of-the-classroom experiences at locations of historical, cultural, or other interest. Topics included include Central Asian languages, history, literature, and Russian language. The program also includes peer tutoring.
For students interested in studying Russian, the OIE offers this program and also a program in Tbilisi, Georgia. WU is not currently utilizing SRAS programs based in Russia.
Housing
Students live in dormitory housing or in homestays in Bishkek. Homestays can be arranged at an additional cost to the base housing fees and include breakfast and supper. Homestay families are typically 15-50 minutes away from the class instruction location and family is Bishkek are often larger, with more children and can include extended family living under one roof which provides extensive opportunities for language practice and cultural interaction.
Dates
This program is available during fall or spring semester. Fall semester begins in early September and ends in mid-December. The spring semester begins in early February and ends in late-May.
Cost
Please see the Willamette Sponsored Programs Cost Matrix for a detailed explanation of the cost of each program. Housing costs will be paid directly to SRAS. Meals vary depending on the type of housing option selected by the student.
