Overview

The School for International Training provides students the unique opportunity to explore global issues through multiple perspectives. International Honors Programs (IHP) begin in the US and spend one month in each of three other countries, on three continents, giving students a comparative look at a critical global issue. Minimum GPA required by host program: 2.5 GPA.

Academics

Through a set curriculum, students explore a critical global issue with traveling faculty and local facilitators. These programs emphasize the multidisciplinary analysis of issues and integrate experience-based learning throughout the semester, culminating in a comparative research project. Program details can be found at the links below. Until new program information is released by IHP-SIT for the upcoming year, consider the information a guide for expectations.

Housing

Each program identifies housing and food options.  Most have a homestay component as well as traveling options including hostels, dormitories, guest houses, or small hotels.  From SIT website: “Please bear in mind that the idea of what constitutes a home (i.e., the physical nature of the house) may be different from what one expects. You will need to be prepared to adapt to a new life with a new diet, a new schedule, new people, and possibly new priorities and expectations.”

Programs

Students will select one program from the following for their application. SIT may not have all the sites updated for 2021-22. For specific terms that are not yet published, program details, sites, and itinerary may be different from currently published terms. See descriptions and sample itineraries that are currently published on the IHP-SIT website.

Willamette students may apply for these IHP programs only - we cannot guarantee each will be available:

  • Climate Change: The Politics of Food, Water & Energy Justice
  • Food Systems: Agriculture, Sustainability & Justice
  • Health & Community: Globalization, Culture & Care
  • Human Rights: Movements, Power & Resistance

Cost

Please see the Willamette Sponsored Programs Cost Matrix for a detailed explanation of the cost of each program. Room, board, and program-related airfare* are paid directly to SIT-IHP. Pre and post-program airfares are arranged and paid for by students.

*Special note on airfare: Costs for travel/airfare during the program are based on travel between multiple locations. Students pay these costs directly to SIT-IHP. These are estimated at $4,000-4,500 in 2019. SIT-IHP will book group flights. Depending on a student's origin, there may be additional flight costs to the U.S. launch site and from the U.S. endpoint. Students will purchase these flights themselves. Ask an advisor for more information.
