There is no better way to learn about domestic and international politics then to experience it. Through American University's Washington Semester program students get a first hand look at Washington D.C., gain knowledge, and experience and make contacts that are useful for their career tracks.
Study in the USA's capital city! The following programs are available: American National Politics; Foreign Policy; Journalism and New Media; Justice and Law; and Transforming Communities. Find program information on the Washington Semester website.
Some American University programs are Extra Fee programs- the "extra" program fee is the responsibility of the student. These "extra fee" programs include: Global Economics and Business; International Environment & Development; International Law & Organizations; Peace & Conflict Resolution (also available without extra fee component); Islam and World Affairs. The extra fee is a result of a study abroad component with these particular programs.
Program participants take seminar classes given by American University faculty, which include guest speakers from related professions. All students serve as interns in companies and government agencies in their field of interest.
Students can choose to live in dormitories at American University or in apartments in D.C. More information on living in D.C.
The Washington D.C. program is available during either Fall or Spring semesters. The Fall semester starts in early September and ends mid December; Spring semester starts mid January and ends early May.
Please see the Willamette Sponsored Programs Cost Matrix for detailed explanation of the cost of each program. The extra fees associated with the "Extra Fee" programs are NOT included and students will pay American University directly for those costs.
