Emergency Preparedness

If you encounter an emergency while traveling, take the following steps:

  1. Where serious injury or illness has occurred, immediately seek medical treatment at the closest medical facility. Emergency numbers for police, medical and fire in foreign countries.

    If medical service is not available, contact Assist America (call +01 (301) 656-4152 or within the U.S. or Canada 1 (800) 872-1414). If you are BlueCross BlueShield holder, you may contact BlueCard worldwide service center at 1-804-673-1177 for assistance.

  2. REMAIN CALM and KEEP TRYING if you cannot get a hold of anyone to help (because phone lines are down, you are trapped... etc.)

  3. Contact Assist America to inform them of your emergency. Assist America will assist, monitor, and coordinate your situation until it has been resolved or you are no longer in danger.
  4. Emergency message transmission services reliably transmit messages between the patient, family, employer or whoever else needs to stay in the information loop.

  5. Notify your supervisor, Dean, VP at Willamette University.

  6. For medical emergency, notify Campus Safety (503-370-6911) or your personal health care provider.

  7. Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or consular service.

  8. Take care of yourself while you are waiting for your contacts to assist you or in case you cannot reach anyone to assist you.
