NetFiles Snapshot (restoring files)

Windows 8/7/Vista/XP - Method 1, using the Windows user interface:

  1. Right click on an existing file in your Personal Share (H:) folder (the destination).
  2. Select Restore previous versions.
  3. Select the version you want to restore from the Properties pop-up window and choose the Open, Copy or Restore option.
  4. Click OK.

Notes about restoring files or folders this way:

  1. If you are looking to restore a deleted file from an earlier version you must click on the folder it resides in, then choose Open or Copy to reveal previous versions.
  2. Using the Restore option is NOT recommended as it will overwrite the contents of a current folder.

Windows 7/Vista/XP - Method 2, using Map network drive to access the special "snapshot" folder

  1. Right click on Computer in the Start Menu or a file listings window or on the Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Select Map network drive.
  3. In the Folder box, enter \\netfiles\YOURUSERNAME\~snapshot (replace YOURUSERNAME with your Willamette network account name).
  4. Click Finish.
  5. A file listings window will open displaying the contents of your snapshots folder:

Windows 8/8.1 - Method 2, using Map network drive to access the special "snapshot" folder

  1. Open This PC or File Explorer.
  2. On the left side of the menus (next to File) click on computer (*alternatively on the far right of the window you can click on the ^ icon next to the help question mark) to expose the task ribbon.
    • Once the ribbon has been exposed click on the Map Network Drive icon.
  3. Right click on an existing file in your Personal Share (H:) folder (the destination).
  4. Select Restore previous versions.
  5. Select the version you want to restore from the Properties pop-up window and choose the Open, Copy or Restore option.
  6. Click OK.

OS X - Using Connect to server to access the special "snapshot" folder

  1. In the Finder bar across the top of the screen go to "Go" and "Connect to Server..."
    If you don't see "Finder" or "Go" in the gray menubar across the top of the screen, click somewhere open on your Desktop to reset it.
  2. In the server address box enter smb://netfiles.willamette.edu/username/~snapshot and click "Connect" at the bottom.
    Make sure to replace "username" with your Willamette username.

  3. Enter your Willamette username and password.
    You may have to delete the username and replace it with your Willamette username.
  4. Browse to the snapshot you want based on the time in terms of how long ago the snapshot was taken.

  5. Copy the file somewhere outside of the ~snapshots folders or else it will be replaced by new snapshots overtime.
