About Willamette

A Private Liberal Arts University

Willamette University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university located directly across the street from Oregon's Capitol. Home to 1,800 undergraduates and 760 graduate students in law and business, Willamette University's campus, centered on the Mill Race and festooned with ancient trees and ample green spaces, strongly reflects the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Described by students in the 2008 Princeton Review of the nation’s best colleges as “academically rigorous,” "intimate" and “seriously gorgeous," Willamette's College of Arts & Sciences is defined by its commitment to excellence in scholarship, teaching innovation, and to the success of our graduates, who go on to prestigious graduate and professional schools, and pursue meaningful careers in the public and private sectors.

Willamette’s reputation as a top-tier libral arts college attracts a wide variety of applicants from all over the nation and the globe. Approximately 4,200 students applied for admission to the class of 2012; 542 have enrolled. The number of Willamette students who apply for admission to Willamette's College of Arts & Sciences has increased by more than 80 percent since 2002.

We continue to admit the most talented, the highest achievers, the most promising with the hope that these outstanding individuals will be able to take advantage of Willamette's vibrant campus culture, -- one that values diverse perspectives and life experiences; a place of ideas and lively intellectual discourse.

Willamette's distinctive Residential Commons, our five academic Centers of Excellence and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art provide opportunities for research, scholarship, experiential learning and intellectual growth outside the traditional classroom. Additionally, more than half of our undergraduates will study abroad, choosing from programs in 40 different countries.  Co-located with Tokyo International University of America, Willamette offers unique opportunities for students interested in Japanese language, culture and other connections to Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Guided and inspired for more than 166 years by our motto, "Not unto ourselves alone are we born," Willamette's campus culture fosters community and values service. Current students dedicate more than 60,000 hours a year to volunteerism.  Ranked 3rd in the nation among colleges its size with numbers of graduates in the Peace Corps, more than 270 Willamette alumni have joined the Peace Corps since its inception in 1961.

Willamette was recognized recently by the National Wildlife Federation as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities, both in its curriculum and its own carbon footprint. This achievement, a direct result of student-led initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette University lives its motto, producing responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity.
