FAQ

What is WEMS?

Willamette University Emergency Medical Services (WEMS) was founded in 1997 by students concerned with the safety and well-being of those on campus.  WEMS is a professionally licensed EMS agency in the State of Oregon, providing Basic Life Support (BLS) to students, faculty, staff, and guests of the Willamette community.

When is WEMS on call?

WEMS responds to emergencies on Campus from 5pm on Thursday to 7am on Friday and from 5pm on Friday through 5pm Sunday.  However, in case of emergency at anytime call: 503-370-6911.

Will I get in trouble for calling WEMS?

The safety of our patients is our number 1 priority.  WEMS operates under a non-punitive educational response, which allows students to call for help while minimizing the legal consequences and the involvement of outside agencies (i.e Salem Police Department).  WEMS prides itself on allowing students to feel safe when calling for help and realizes that confidentiality and the preservation of private information is of the utmost importance.

How can I join WEMS?

WEMS requires their responders to be medically trained at least through a First Responder level of certification.  A First Responder training course is organized through WEMS every Fall.  If you are interested in taking this course or in joining WEMS please email wemsdirector@willamette.edu

What if I already have my First Responder training?

If you already have a valid First Responder certification you may join WEMS at anytime.  Just email wemsdirector@willamette.edu.

What if I have Wilderness First Responder training?

Unfortunately, this type of certification is not the one needed to join our organization.  You will need to complete a regular First Responder certification before joining WEMS.
