Statement of Purpose and Membership
Purpose and charge
The purpose of the Council on Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ) is to deepen the University’s commitment to diversity through the following activities:
- Promote the centrality of diversity and social justice in the University mission statement and core activities;
- Create and support educational programs related to diversity and social justice;
- Fund and award grants that enhance diversity and social justice on campus;
- Promote a diverse faculty by assisting in developing effective recruitment and retention practices;
- Promote curricula that appropriately reflect diversity and social justice;
- Invite speakers—some for extended stay—to campus to discuss and debate issues related to diversity and social justice and;
- Monitor and report annually on the diversity of the composition of the faculty, students and staff and provide an annual “report card” on the state of diversity on campus.
Membership
Council membership shall consist of faculty, students and staff appointed by the University president in consultation with the chair, deans and faculty governance committees as follows:
Faculty
- College of Liberal Arts (CLA): 4 faculty recommended by the Academic Council in consultation with the Multi-Cultural Affairs Committee (MAC);
- School of Education (SOE): 1 faculty or other designee recommended by the Associate Dean of Education College of Law: 1 faculty recommended by the Dean of College of Law
- Atkinson Graduate School of Management (AGSM): 1 faculty recommended by the Dean of AGSM
Students
- College of Liberal Arts: 6 students recommended by the Director of Multicultural Affairs;
- School of Education: 1 student recommended by the Associate Dean of Education
- College of Law: 1 student recommended by the Dean of College of Law
- Atkinson Graduate School of Management: 1 student recommended by the Dean of AGSM
Staff
The president shall appoint one staff from each of the following administrative offices or areas:
- President’s Office
- Athletics Department
- CLA dean’s office
- College of Law dean or administrative office
- AGSM dean or administrative office
- Classified Employees
- CLA Enrollment
- Human Resources
- Alumni and Parent Relations
- International Education
- Office of Multicultural Affairs
- Tokyo International University of America
The president of the University shall appoint the Council Chair.
Faculty shall be appointed for two-year terms, renewable upon the recommendation of the deans of CLA, SOE, Law and AGSM. Faculty terms shall be staggered to ensure continuity of experience. The President, in consultation with the deans and appropriate faculty governance committees or councils, will appoint interim faculty to replace regularly appointed faculty on leave.
Students shall be appointed for one-year terms, renewable upon the recommendation of the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the deans of SOE, LAW and AGSM, respectively.
Staff shall be appointed for three-year terms, renewable by the president.
Council membership shall reflect the diversity of the University community.
Ex Officio voting members shall consist of:
- University President
- Dean of College of Liberal Arts
- Dean of Campus Life
- Dean of College of Law
- Dean of Graduate School of Management
Committees
The Council shall consist of the following committees:
- Committee on Faculty
- Committee on Staff and Administration
- Committee on Students
- Education Committee
- Mini-Grants Committee
- Committee on Resources and Publicity
Meetings
The Council shall meet during the academic year at the call of the Chair or President, but no less than twice each term.
Annual Report
The Council shall provide an annual report to the University president no later than 1 May of each year that shall include, but not limited to, an assessment or “report card” on the state of diversity on campus. It shall also include, but not limited to, an analysis of the diversity of the composition of the faculty, students and staff.
