Graduate Financial Aid

To be considered for Willamette University scholarships and loans, it is important to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1 as possible. FAFSA forms are available from financial aid offices of colleges and universities throughout the United States. You can also submit the FAFSA online. Willamette University's school code is 003227.

All students who apply for admission and file a FAFSA will be considered for the maximum loans and scholarships available. Timely completion of the application is strongly recommended.

Willamette University Scholarships

  • MAT Departmental Scholarship (full-time/Aspire part-time)

    These scholarships are awarded based on academic credentials as well as needs within the profession. Applicants who fit one or more of the following six categories are most likely to receive the award:
    1. bilingual
    2. non-traditional age (over 30)
    3. woman in math or science
    4. man in early childhood or elementary education
    5. person of color
    6. seeking ESOL endorsement
  • Mary Stuart Rogers Scholarship (full-time only)

    The $4,000 Mary Stuart Rogers Scholarships are based on academic credentials, leadership and financial need. Strength in service and leadership are the most important criteria. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA to be considered. Up to 14 awards may be given each year.
  • Gates Scholarship (full-time only)

    The $4,000 Gates Scholarships are based on academic credentials and financial need. You must fill out a FAFSA form in order to be eligible for the Gates Scholarship.
  • Melvin Henderson-Rubio Scholarship (full-time only)

    The $5,000 Melvin Henderson-Rubio Scholarship is available to any minority student enrolling from a home address in the greater Los Angeles area. Academic credentials and financial need are considered. One award may be given each year.
  • James V. Scariot Jr. Scholarship (full-time only)

    The $1,000 James V. Scariot Jr. Scholarship is awarded based on academic credentials and financial needs. Preference will be given to students who are actively engaged in such campus-based extracurricular activities as coaching. One award may be given each year.
  • Thompson-Payne Scholarship (full-time only)

    The $4,500 Thompson-Payne Scholarship is available to admissible applicants who are graduates of The Dalles High School. One award may be given each year.

Student Loans

  • Federal Stafford Loan Programs: Subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loans up to $18,500 are available. The subsidized portion is based on financial need as determined by FAFSA results. A promissory note is required.
  • Private Education Loans: A number of sources for these credit-based loans are available. More expensive than Stafford Loans, they should be used as a last resort.

  • State of Oregon: The Oregon Student Assistance Commission has several scholarships available to Oregonians. You can reach OSAC at 541-687-7395 or online.
  • The Gates Millennium Scholars Program: This program offers scholarships to students of color looking to enter careers in education. They can be contacted online
  • Several scholarship sites are worth exploring for additional options: FastWeb, FinAid, and SallieMae.
