ED 512 Practicum (3)
Students will observe master reading professionals and work with small reading groups, whole classes and two authorization levels of children. Experience with testing, interpretation of results and planning will occur under the guidance of the practicum supervisors. The three credits must be distributed across two adjacent authorization levels.

ED 520 Principles/Foundations of Reading (2)
Emergence of reading programs, history of reading in the schools, and knowledge of the skills needed for reading readiness and the sequence of skills needed to become a proficient reader. Part of work for this course will be done independently and the class will probably finish in mid-Oct.

ED 521 Applied Linguistics (2)
Knowledge of applied linguistics, and the function and structure of written and spoken languages.

ED 522 Reading Methods and Materials (3)
Hands-on learning of skills needed to become a reading specialist: phonics baseline, word-attack, comprehension, content reading skills, curriculum development. Finding and developing appropriate materials; sharing “tricks of the trade.”

ED 523 Classroom Reading Diagnosis (3)
An understanding of assessment and evaluation of reading. Different modes of assessment, current assessment programs, and examining the assessment process to ensure an accurate evaluation of children's reading skills, including special needs and second-culture children.

ED 524 Special Reader (2)
Assisting special-needs and second-language children through different reading formats, modified programs of reading, the identification of reading levels, individualizing reading programs, and innovative techniques for identifying, assessing, evaluating and planning.

ED 525 Reading Program Administration (1)
Responsibilities of a reading program administrator, including evaluation of diagnostic and remedial reading programs to meet the national, state, and district standards and requirements; and management of reading systems to ensure accurate and thorough record-keeping and reporting.

ED 526 Language Acquisition (2)
Knowledge of first- and second-language development in children and young adults - the applied study of language, the basis for all learning. Close attention will be given to the universal developmental sequences of language and the differences found in various cultures. The relationship of phonemic awareness, phonetic transcriptions, phonics and language experiences will be emphasized. (Reading-related) Graded
