Being an International Peer Coach is an unforgettable intercultural experience. As a leader, mentor and friend to new Japanese students on campus you would receive extensive leadership and intercultural training in addition to working on your own personal professional development projects. Similar to a Willamette Opening Days Leader, an IPC would be responsible for introducing a group of TIUA students to Willamette and Salem Communities.
For seven weeks your job would be to help your group members become confident and independent in their new environment helping them achieve a deeper understanding of the American/Willamette university way of life. Introduce them to the best places to study, the best coffee shops downtown, or the sandiest beach on the Oregon Coast. Help new TIUA students work through what it means to live with a roommate, how Americans make friends, body language and communication styles, and college life in general. Transitioning to a new culture is never easy, but as an IPC you can help smooth this transition and make life-long friends in the process!
IPCs work during spring semester and are recruited starting in September. Applications are available on line at www.tiua.edu/about/opportunities.shtml, at TIUA, or the U.C. info desk. For more information contact Jeani Bragg at jbragg@willamette.edu. x3300

Academic Peer Tutor
The nationally certified, TIUA Academic Peer Tutoring program offers interested Willamette students a chance to develop leaderships skills while they serve the needs of TIUA students learning English and studying other subject areas. Tutors are given intensive training in a variety of areas that are pertinent to academic tutoring, but which are also useful for many other future professional endeavors.
After successful completion of training and tutoring experience, tutors have the chance to receive national certification as professional tutors by the National Tutoring Association, the leading professional tutoring association that also certifies our program. In addition, interested tutors can earn academic credit through Willamette for serving as peer tutors. However, by far the greatest benefit from participation in the tutoring program is the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of TIUA students as you help them navigate the challenges of learning a second language and adapting to another culture.
Positions become available once or twice a year and applications are available
at TIUA or online at: http://www.tiua.edu/about/Downloadables/fall06-tutor-app.doc
