Professor Gary Tallman
  FACULTY QUOTE
Gary Tallman
Professor of Biology
For Gary Tallman, the greatest reward of being a professor is watching his students as they become practicing, creative scientists. “When they make that transition successfully,” says Tallman, “I think you’ve hit the center of what it means to have a liberal arts education.” Sarah Fiedler ’02, a biology major who worked in one of Tallman’s labs says “Professor Tallman fosters a great sense of teamwork in and out of his lab. We not only participated in science together, but our lab group also had fun together – miniature golf, dinners at his house and bluegrass music in Portland.”

Development: Areas to Give

Student ScientistHow Do I Inspire? Academic Excellence

“How do I inspire my students to like cell biology?” asks Dr. Gary Tallman, the Taul Watanabe Professor of Science. “I think it is my enthusiasm about what I do, I think they catch my excitement about the material and they see that I am really trying to engage them.” Since joining Willamette’s faculty in 1996, Tallman has made immense contributions to the University through his research, campus involvement and most importantly, his teaching.

Great teaching and scholarship lie at the heart of Willamette’s academic excellence. Endowed chairs and professorships are two of the best resources we have for preserving this unique asset. Endowed chairs and professorships enable Willamette to attract and keep the best teaching and scholarly talents from around the world. Across the University, our goal is to endow an additional six faculty positions in order to ensure our continuing academic excellence.

Two Student ScientistsBut great faculty cannot impact the lives of students without programmatic support. Willamette will launch a series of new programs and initiatives that add strength and flexibility to its educational resources. The College of Liberal Arts will endow a faculty leadership program, establish an Ethnic Studies program and increase endowment support for the Public Policy Center which will greatly broaden the University’s capabilities. Willamette’s Law School will enhance its leadership position by expanding its Center for Law and Government, Center for International Law, Center for Law and Business and Center for Dispute Resolution.

“Dr. Tallman has been a wonderful advisor and mentor. I can’t imagine a better introduction to what it means to be a scientific researcher.” –Sarah Fiedler ’02
