German word processing in the LLC

The LLC lab at Willamette University is a PC lab with Windows XP and Microsoft
Office XP.
Each computer also has Quelle v.1.00a, a writing assistance program for German.

Microsoft Word
English (United States) Keyboard

1. Typing special characters: to type special characters in Microsoft Word, you
must do it in two steps. The first step involves pressing the control key plus
other keys simultaneously. The second step is typing the letter you want. Here
is a chart that explains how to type the various characters:

ä - control key + shift + ; , then a
ö - control key + shift + ; , then o
ü - control key + shift + ; , then u
ß - control key + shift + 7 , then s

Mac OS Keyboard

ä - option + u; , then a
ö - option + u; , then o
ü - option + u; , then u
ß - option + s


2. To use the proofreading tools to proofread in German, highlight the selection you
want to proofread; then, go to the "Tools" menu up at the top, go to "Language," and
click on "Set language." Select "German" from the dialog box that appears. Then
click on "Spelling and Grammar" under the "Tools" menu to proofread the selection.
The language lab is also equipped with Microsoft's Proofreading Tools in several
languages, one of which is German. To start typing in German, without using any
special characters' short-cut keys, you need to set your input language to German in
the Language bar at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Then, you can look
at the link below to learn how to use the German keyboard's keys:

Quelle

Location: Quelle can be found on the computers in the main WITS computer
lab (Smullin 119), the Language Learning Center, and the Writing Center. It is
currently only on PC computers. To Begin: Go to the
Start Menu>Programs>German>click on Quelle. Once the program is opened
go to "File" and click on "New" (Ctrl+N). A new file will open up.

1. Typing special characters: First you need to set your input language to
English(United States) and then keyboard input to United States - International.
Then, to type in the special German characters in Quelle, you need the following
key combinations:

ä - right Alt key + q
ö - right Alt key + p
ü - right Alt key + y
ß - right Alt key + s

2. Quelle also gives you the opportunity to use a lexical assistant, a dictionary,
and a grammar assistant.

Korrektor Plus:

Location: Korrektor Plus can be found on computers K-M in the Language Learning Center. To begin using this program go to Start Menu>Programs>Languages>German>click on Korrector.

Korrektor is a spelling and grammar verification tool that works in conjunction with Microsoft Word.
