2006 Laptop Battery Recall

There is a major recall going on for laptop batteries made by Sony in recent months. Sony is a major producer of batteries for laptops, their products are used by many manufacturers including Dell, Apple, IBM (now Lenovo), and HP (just to name a few).

What's the problem?

According to Sony: “…on rare occasions, microscopic metal particles in the recalled battery cells may come into contact with other parts of the battery cell, leading to a possibility of short circuit within the cell.” Mostly this means that, in an affected battery, the battery pack will simply power off when it short-circuits. However: “under certain rare conditions an internal short circuit may lead to cell overheating and potentially flames.”

What is being done to resolve this?

In the interest of global safety, Sony is offering a voluntary global replacement program for these batteries. Nearly all of the affected Manufacturers of these laptops are also participating in their own voluntary recalls as well.

What do I need to do?

We have compiled a list of all the known manufacturers affected by this recall.

However. The list of laptops affected by this recall continues to grow. WITS always recommends you contact the manufacturer to inquire about any safety recalls for your products.
