Authenticated
SMTP or How do I send email from off-campus?
Mail servers are normally only allowed to deliver
messages for members of their "domain".
(i.e.: willamette.edu). When you are not connected
directly to our network (i.e. using your DSL
or cable modem service at home), our outgoing
mail server does not identify you as part of
the Willamette community and will not allow
messages to be sent through. This keeps outside
sources; spammers and other miscreants, from
using our email server as an open relay to the
internet.
Authenticated SMTP allows our mail server to
identify people as members of the Willamette
community, and therefore allow the sending of
email for that person, even if they are sending
email from a computer on a non-Willamette network.
Consider it 'logging-in' to send your email,
just like you do for receiving mail.
Configuring
email programs for using Authenticated SMTP.
Some
email programs don't work with Authenticated
SMTP.
Not all email programs work with our flavor of
Authenticated SMTP. With literally dozens of email
programs to choose from available, WITS has not
tested them all. If you are unsure if your email
program will support Authenticated SMTP, contact
WITS, and we'll be happy to help find out if this
feature is usable.
An
important note about email virus scanning.
Authenticated SMTP encrypts the email you send out.
Because of this, antivirus programs that you have
set to scan your outgoing email will not be able to
do so and the email will fail to send. Is is necessary
to configure your email program to
not scan
your outgoing mail in order to use Authenticated SMTP.
If you are using Willamette University's supplied
Symantec Antivirus Program(SAV), we have included
instructions on how to turn
off this feature. If you are a Staff or Faculty
member using our managed client, you may not be
able to configure this option yourself (we have
locked-down many features in SAV). Please contact
your USC or the WITS Help Desk, and we can make
arrangements to configure your SAV program to work
with Authenticated SMTP.
