Pine
is a text-based email client. It can be accessed from
on or off campus, from any computer with a network connection
and a Telnet or Secure Shell client installed (both are available
for free download).
Like
other email clients, Pine allows you to send and receive email
messages, manage mail folders, and maintain a personal address
book. Pine uses automatic address completion during message
composition. Pine also allows you to view Willamette or Usenet
Newsgroups.
Because
Pine is a text-based program, there is no graphical interface,
and you can't use a mouse to point and click. All commands are
made through key strokes.
Pine
allows you send and receive email attachments, but it handles
attachments in a different manner than do the email clients
mentioned above. In order to send an attachment, it must first
be saved in your network home directory. Because Pine is text-based,
you cannot view an attachment directly in Pine unless the attachment
is text only. Attachments of other formats must be saved to
your network home directory, and then viewed in another program
such as Netscape or Microsoft Word (the program you use will
depend on the file type of the attachment).
