Dial-up Setup Instructions for

 

Windows 95/98

Introduction

This document contains instructions for connecting a Windows 95 or 98 computer to the internet using Willamette's dial-up service. You will need:

This document assumes that you already have the appropriate hardware and software installed, and that you are familiar with Windows 95 or 98. If you need assistance, please call the WITS Help Desk at 503-370-6767.


IMPORTANT NOTE TO WINDOWS 95 AND 98 USERS WHO MAY HAVE CONFIGURED THEIR CURRENT COMPUTER FOR WILLAMETTE DIAL-UP PRIOR TO APRIL 2002 AND HAVE NOT ALREADY CORRECTED THE TCP/IP SETTINGS

Before proceeding, please check the following settings:

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Choose Settings > Control Panels
  3. Open the Network control panel
  4. On the Configuration tab, select the TCP/IP item
  5. Click on the IP address tab
  6. Choose the Obtain an IP address automatically item
  7. Click on the WINS Configuration tab
  8. Choose the Disable WINS Resolution item
  9. Click on the DNS Configuration tab
  10. Choose the Disable DNS item
  11. Click OK to close TCP/IP Properties
  12. Click OK to close the Network control panel
  13. Restart your computer
  14. Proceed with the next section to check your current settings or configure a new dialup connection

Configuring Windows 95 or 98
  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  3. Double-click on Make New Connection.
  4. For Name type Willamette.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Leave the Area code box blank (10-digit dialing is mandatory in the Salem area).
  7. Under Telephone number type the appropriate number. If you need to disable call waiting, add *70 for US West, or 70# for GTE in front of the number being dialed.

    Use one of these numbers for your primary number and the other for your alternate number (both provide the fastest dialup service available):
    - 503-370-6627
    - 503-370-6628

  8. Leave the Country code set to United States of America.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click Finish.
  11. Click on the Willamette icon with the RIGHT mouse button and select Properties.
    1. Clear the Use Area Code and Dialing Properties checkbox.
    2. Click on Server Types.
    3. Under Type of Dial-Up Server select PPP: Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
    4. Under Advanced options select Log on to network
    5. Under Allowed network protocols select ONLY TCP/IP .
    6. Click on TCP/IP Settings.
    7. Select Server assigned IP address.
    8. Select Server assigned name server addresses.
    9. Check Use IP header compression.
    10. Check Use default gateway on remote network.
    11. Click OK.
  12. Click OK

Connecting to Willamette's Dial-up Server
  1. Make sure your modem is turned on and connected to a phone line.
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  3. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  4. Double-click on the Willamette icon.
  5. Enter your username and password in the appropriate boxes.
  6. Click on Connect. The modem dials.
  7. The Connecting to Willamette status box tells you it is Verifying user name and password, then that it is Logging on to network , then that you are connected to Willamette. An online timer also appears.
  8. You can now minimize the Connected to Willamette status box and start any Internet applications.

NOTE: If your Internet software (Telnet, Netscape, etc.) is properly installed, your computer will make the appropriate network connections when you start the Internet software. You will be prompted to login, if necessary.   


Disconnecting
  1. Close all Internet applications, then go to the Connected to Willamette status box.
  2. Click on the Disconnect button. 

Email Client Settings

The easiest way to check your Willamette email from off campus is to use Webmail. Open your web browser and go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/

If you are going to be using an e-mail client other than Webmail or Pine (such as Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
