FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used to transfer files from one computer to another over a network. If you have a university-owned computer, it should have WS_FTPLE already installed. WS_FTP Home and Pro are available for a 30-day trial and purchase, but WS_FTPLE (the free educational version) is no longer available for download.

 Once you start WS_FTPLE, you’ll see a window similar to the one below.

 LOGGING IN TO A WILLAMETTE ACCOUNT

 To gain access to a network computer, you’ll need enter a host, user ID and password  in the Session Properties dialog box:

1. Host Name/Address : Enter the name of the server you want to connect to:
   ftp.willamette.edu (University department web publishing accounts).
   home.willamette.edu (personal accounts / home directories).
2. User ID : Enter your Willamette network login name.
3. Password : Enter your password.
4. Make sure the box marked Anonymous is not checked.
5. Click the OK button.

    Anonymous is used to connect to remote servers which allow "guests" to connect and download files. WS_FTPLE can be configured to use "anonymous" as the User ID and your e-mail address as the password, which is what most anonymous FTP servers expect.

Once you are connected to the server, a window similar to the one below should appear. If you have trouble, look closely at the small window at the bottom of the window for more information. Make sure you have entered your User ID and Password correctly.

  

 The left side of the window is the Local System (the files on your hard drive). The right side of the window is the Remote Site (the files on the network server). You can scroll through each window to view files, folders (directories), and disk drives. University department accounts will default to the correct Remote Site. For personal web publishing, you will need to create a directory called public_html in your home directory, if it does not already exist. All of the files that you want to be included in your personal web site must be stored in this directory.

CREATING A DIRECTORY

1.  Click on the MkDir button on the right (Remote Site) side of the screen to create a directory on the server.

2.  Click on the MkDir button on the left (Local System) side of the screen to create a directory on the PC.

3.  Click OK.

TRANSFERRING A FILE TO YOUR NETWORK ACCOUNT 

1. Find your file on the Local System (your hard drive). Double click on the file name.
2. A copy of the file will be transferred to the server.

Note: You can transfer multiple files by using the Windows [Shift]+Click or [Crtl]+Click mouse techniques for selecting multiple items, then use the arrow buttons in the center of the WS_FTPLE screen. The direction the arrow points indicates which direction the selected files will be transferred.

 TRANSFERRING A FILE FROM YOUR NETWORK ACCOUNT 

1. Find your file on the Remote Site (the network server).
2. Double click on the file name.
3. A copy of the file will be transferred your hard drive.

You can also use WS_FTPLE to manage the files and directories on any disk drive to which you have access, including your home directory on the network server. The buttons to the right of the Local System and the Remote Site windows have buttons to change the current directory ChgDir, make a new directory MkDir, remove a directory RmDir, View the contents of a file View, rename a file Rename, and delete a file Delete.

 CONFIGURING WS_FTP

WS_FTPLE can be configured to simplify the login for a particular account name and to default to the proper locations, both on your local machine and the remote server. Configuring WS_FTPLE is optional, and needs to be done only once for each session profile. 

1. Start WS_FTPLE.
2. If necessary, click the General tab.
3. Click New.
4. Enter a Profile Name in the field at the top of the Session Properties dialog box.
5. Make sure the box marked Anonymous is not checked. Enter the Host Name/Address, User ID, and Password as instructed on above (LOGGING IN TO YOUR WILLAMETTE ACCOUNT).
   • If you check the Save Pwd box, you will not have to enter your password each time you start WS_FTPLE. If your machine is used by others, or is in a public area, you should not check the Save Pwd box.
6. Click the Apply button to save the profile.
7. Click on the Startup tab.
8. Enter a default directory (e.g., C:\My Documents) for the Initial Local Folder (your hard drive). The Initial Remote Site Folder is the location on the web server where you publish your web documents. For department web publishing accounts, leave Initial Remote Site Folder blank. For personal web publishing, you can set this directory to public_html by entering ~/public_html. If you are not connected on campus or via Willamette PPP, you must specify the full path (/home/dante/group/username/public_html/). Username is your Willamette network login name. 
9. Click the Apply button to save these settings in the current profile.
10. The next time you use WS_FTPLE, select your Profile Name from the pull-down list at the top of the Session Properties dialog box.
