Windows 2000/XP

Windows 9x

To map to your Home Directory (H Drive)

  1. In Drive, choose drive letter H:
  2. In Folder (Windows 2000/XP) or Path (Windows 9x), type one of the following paths:

\\home\username (where 'username' is your Willamette login name)
\\home\homes

  1. Click Finish (Windows 2000/XP) or OK (Windows 9x).
  2. After a few seconds, the contents of your home directory will be displayed in a new window. If you close the window, you can still access your home directory by opening My Computer and looking for username on 'home' (H:).

Other drive mapping options

  • To map to a computer or folder you've used recently, click the arrow to the right of Path (or Folder), and then select the resource you want from the list.

  • If you want to make a network drive reconnect automatically each time you start your computer and logon to Windows, put a check in the Reconnect at logon box. If a password is required, Windows prompts you.

Note: Windows can only reconnect a network drive if you are connected to Willamette's network at the time you start your computer. If you're not connected to the network, you may see an error message saying that Windows could not reconnect to the drive.

Other common Willamette network drives

Here are some examples of other mappings and drive letters that are in common use on campus:

  • H: \\home\username (home directory)
  • L: \\home\software (CLA lab and network software)
  • N: \\home\classes (CLA document storage for classes)
  • N: \\home\lawnet (Law network software and documents)
  • P: \\home\pub (CLA public storage space)

Removing a drive-letter assignment
  1. Double-click on My Computer (Windows XP: click on Start, then choose My Computer).
  2. Right-click on the drive you want to remove, and from the pop-out menu, choose Disconnect.

Troubleshooting Suggestions

  • Make sure your Windows logon name is the same as your Willamette username. Windows User Accounts can be managed through the Control Panel utility, under Users and Passwords.
  • Make sure you are using "Client for Microsoft Networks" as your primary Windows logon. Windows logon options can be configured through the Control Panel utility, under Network (or Network and Dial-up Options).
  • Some personal firewall software and other similar security utilities have been known to interfere with the ability to map network drives. If you have such software installed and are having problems accessing network drives, try disabling the software.
