Introduction

This document contains instructions for connecting a Macintosh computer with OS X to the campus network via Ethernet in a network-wired residence hall (all halls except Haseldorf Apartments). It is assumed that you have the correct hardware already installed, and that you are familiar with Mac OS X.

Support for Residence Hall Ethernet Connections

WITS user support for residence hall ethernet connections is limited to this document, and basic troubleshooting through the WITS Help Desk. It is your responsibility to have the appropriate hardware and software installed on your computer. If you require assistance beyond that which the WITS Help Desk can provide over the phone for setting up your connections, installing software or hardware, or configuring software, you must retain the services of a friend or a qualified technician, such as those listed in the telephone directory under Computers-Dealers.

What You Must Have First

To connect to the campus network, you will need the following:

Getting Started

Once you have the items above, you will go through the following steps to get connected:

Installing a network card

Most newer Macintosh computers should have a network card already built in. If for some reason your computer is not "ethernet ready" with a port for a twisted pair ("RJ-45") connector, then you will need to install a network card. In some cases, you must have the card installed by a professional. Consult your computer manual or a computer store to find out if you can install a card on your own, and to find out which type of card you need.

The Willamette Store carries cards for many of the Performa and PowerMacintosh models. Some Macintosh models will use an external connection device. Laptop computers will need to have a 10/100 Base-T PCMCIA card or similar external connector (make sure to mention to your salesperson the brand and model of computer you are connecting when purchasing a card). It is your responsibility to have the card installed correctly.

Connecting your Computer to the Ethernet Port

You will need an ethernet cable (described above) long enough to reach from your computer to the wall jack in your room. The Willamette Store (503-370-6315) sells cables in a variety of lengths from 6 ft. to 20 ft. long.

Insert one end of the cable into the port on the back or side of your computer. Make sure the cable's connector audibly "clicks" upon insertion. Plug the other end of the cable into the wall jack, also listening for a "click".

Configuring Mac OS X

The instructions in the following section cover the Mac OS X network settings. Read all of the instructions carefully before making any changes. Have your Mac OS X CD-ROM or installation diskettes handy; some installation procedures may require them. Once you have completed making the necessary changes, you will need to restart your computer. The changes will not take affect until you have done so.

NETWORK SETTINGS

  1. Go to the Apple Menu and select System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Network icon (appears as a globe).
  3. For Location, choose Automatic from the pull-down menu.
  4. For Show, choose Built-in Ethernet from the pull-down menu.
    * If you have another network device besides the built-in ethernet card that you'd like to use instead (like a PCMCIA card, for example), then you'll want to select it here.
  5. For Configure, choose Using DHCP Server from the pull-down menu.
  6. Close the Network window by pulling down the System Prefs menu (upper left-hand corner of the screen, next to the Apple), and selecting Quit System Prefs. Save changes when prompted.
  7. Restart your computer.

Register Your Computer on the Network

Finishing Up

You should now be ready to access the internet or email from your room. Please keep this document for reference should something happen to your network connection during the school year.

The easiest way to check your Willamette email is to use Webmail. Open your web browser and go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/

If you are going to be using an e-mail client other than Webmail (such as Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
