Introduction
This document
contains instructions for connecting a Windows 2000 computer to the campus network
via Ethernet in a network-wired residence hall (all halls except Haseldorf Apartments).
It is assumed that you have the correct hardware already installed, and that
you are familiar with Windows 2000.
Support for Residence Hall
Ethernet Connections
WITS user support
for residence hall ethernet connections is limited to this document, and basic
troubleshooting through the WITS Help Desk. It is your responsibility to have
the appropriate hardware and software installed on your computer. If you require
assistance beyond that which the WITS Help Desk can provide over the phone for
setting up your connections, installing software or hardware, or configuring
software, you must retain the services of a friend or a qualified technician,
such as those listed in the telephone directory under Computers-Dealers.
What You Must Have First
To connect to
the campus network, you will need the following:
- Willamette
network account - If you have not already created your new Willamette
account, you can do so during the process of registering your computer on
the network. Go ahead and proceed with the instructions in this document until
you reach the section called "Register Your Computer on the Network".
In that section, you will find instructions for creating your account as you
register.
If you wish to create your network account prior to setting up your computer
on the Willamette Network, you have two options:
- From any
computer with access to the World Wide Web, go to: https://secure.willamette.edu/newuser/
Make sure you have your Willamette ID number handy! Follow the instructions
on the screen.
- Visit one
of the general access computer labs (Smullin 119 or Collins 407). Make
sure to have your Willamette ID number handy! Go to a Windows PC, and
at the login screen, leave the username and password blank, and click
on the New User button. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you
need help, contact the WITS Help Desk (contact info above).
- PC computer
running Windows 2000 - Your PC must meet all of the minimum requirements
described below:
- Pentium
II, 266 MHz Processor
- 64 Mb Ram
- 1 Gb Hard
Drive
- Original
system software and drivers - In the event that certain software components
need to be reinstalled, you must have your computer's original system software
disks or CDs, as well as any auxiliary software disks or CDs for items such
as CD-ROM drives or printers. WITS will not provide you with system
software.
- Web browser
- Either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator will allow you to gain access
to the internet and browse the World Wide Web.
- 10/100 Base-T
network card - This is different than a modem! We strongly encourage you
to purchase a computer that has a network card preinstalled. If your computer
is not equipped with a network card, then you will have to purchase and install
one. The Willamette Store
sells inexpensive network cards that are known to be compatible with our network.
Call 503-370-6315 for pricing information.
- Cat-5 twisted
pair ethernet cable (with "RJ-45" connector) - This is different
than a phone cord!
 |
|
Perfect!
|
Will
fit, but won't work!
|
|
A ethernet
or network cable should have 8 gold-colored pins or "teeth"
inside the plastic connectors at each end. A phone cord only has 4
pins.
The
cord itself should be round, not flat like a phone cord. A proper
ethernet cable uses "twisted pair" wires, which are impossible
to achieve with a flat cord.
|
Getting Started
Once you have
the items above, you will go through the following steps to get connected:
- Install a network
card if not already present.
- Connect the
computer to the ethernet port.
- Configure Windows
2000 for network services.
- Register your
computer on the network via a web browser.
Installing a network card
If your computer
is not "ethernet ready" with a port for a twisted pair ("RJ-45") connector,
then you will need to install a network card. Laptop computers will need to
have a 10/100 Base-T PCMCIA card or similar external connector (make sure to
mention to your salesperson the brand and model of computer you are connecting
when purchasing a card). If you go with another brand, make sure it is Plug-and-Play
capable . You should follow the installation and configuration instructions
that come with your network card. It is your responsibility to have the card
installed correctly.
Connecting your Computer
to the Ethernet Port
You will need
an ethernet cable (described above) long enough to reach from your computer
to the wall jack in your room. The
Willamette Store (503-370-6315) sells cables in a variety of lengths from
6 ft. to 20 ft. long.
Insert one end
of the cable into the port on the back of your computer. Make sure the cable's
connector audibly "clicks" upon insertion. Plug the other end of the
cable into the wall jack, also listening for a "click".
Restart your computer.
From the Start button, select Run, then type cmd and click
OK. This will bring up a black DOS window. At the C:\> prompt,
type ipconfig. Look for the IP Address; it should start with 158.104.
Configuring Windows 2000
The instructions
in the following sections cover the Windows 2000 system properties, the network
settings, and network adapter settings. Read all of the instructions carefully
before making any changes. Have your Windows 2000 CD-ROM or installation diskettes
handy; some installation procedures may require them. Once you have completed
making the necessary changes, you will be prompted to restart Windows. The changes
will not take affect until you have done so.
NETWORK
SETTINGS
- Double-click
on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
- Open the
Control Panel folder.
- Double-click
on Network and Dial Up Connections.
- Double-click
on Local Area Connection, select Properties.

You should
only see these two items - if any other items appear (especially AOL
and Dialup adapters), uncheck the check-box next to them.
|
|
- Select
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Click
on Properties.
- Select
Obtain an IP address automatically.
- Select
Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click
OK.
- Click
on OK in the Local Area Network Properties window.
- Click
Close in the Local Area Network Status window. At this
point, you may be prompted to restart your computer.
|
 |
- On your desktop,
right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Click on
the Network Identification tab.
- Click on
the Properties button.
- For Computer
Name, enter your Willamette login name.
- For Workgroup,
type RESNET.

web page, no matter what URL you enter. (NOTE: if your computer previously
ran the web browser, it is possible for it to pull up pages from a "cache"
file. If this happens, click on the "Reload" or "Refresh" button.)
Read this page, then click on "Next".
- You will be
asked for a login name and password. This is the same login and password that
you use to get your e-mail. If you do not yet have a Willamette network account,
follow the link on the Willamette Network registration webpage to create one. Once you
have completed your account creation, you will need to restart your web browser
to get back to the Willamette Network page. Proceed with the rest of the instructions
in this document.
- Once you have
logged in, a page will appear welcoming you and asking for information. Fill
in the information as prompted.
- You will be
asked to read and agree to be bound by Willamette's Acceptable
Use for Residential Computing document. If you
wish, you can print this document, or obtain a printed copy from the document
rack in the General Access Lab (Smullin 119). By clicking on the button you
are binding yourself to the policies and acceptable uses whether or not you
read the document! If you do not agree to the documents then you will need
to contact WITS (Smullin 101 or x6004). Your network connection cannot be
activated until you agree to be bound by this document.
- A page will
appear confirming your registration.
- Restart
your computer and your network connection will be fully operational.
Finishing Up
You should now
be ready to access the internet or email from your room. Please keep this document
for reference should something happen to your network connection during the
school year.
The easiest way
to check your Willamette email is to use Webmail. Open your web browser and
go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/
If you are going
to be using an e-mail client other than Webmail (such as Netscape Messenger
or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
- IMAP server
(incoming mail): mail.willamette.edu
- SMTP server
(outgoing mail):
- If you're
on campus: smtp.willamette.edu
- If you're
off campus, using Willamette's dial-up service: smtp.willamette.edu
- If you're
off campus, using an ISP (such as AOL, Earthlink, AT&T, Qwest, etc.),
then use the SMTP server name provided by the ISP. Such information
can usually be found in the ISPs documentation, on their website, or by
contacting their customer service department.
- News Server
(News Groups): news.willamette.edu
- Directory Server:
ldap.willamette.edu
search base: o=willamette.edu
