Introduction

This document contains instructions for connecting a Windows 2000 computer to the campus network via Ethernet in a network-wired residence hall (all halls except Haseldorf Apartments). It is assumed that you have the correct hardware already installed, and that you are familiar with Windows 2000.

Support for Residence Hall Ethernet Connections

WITS user support for residence hall ethernet connections is limited to this document, and basic troubleshooting through the WITS Help Desk. It is your responsibility to have the appropriate hardware and software installed on your computer. If you require assistance beyond that which the WITS Help Desk can provide over the phone for setting up your connections, installing software or hardware, or configuring software, you must retain the services of a friend or a qualified technician, such as those listed in the telephone directory under Computers-Dealers.

What You Must Have First

To connect to the campus network, you will need the following:

Getting Started

Once you have the items above, you will go through the following steps to get connected:

  1. Install a network card if not already present.
  2. Connect the computer to the ethernet port.
  3. Configure Windows 2000 for network services.
  4. Register your computer on the network via a web browser.

Installing a network card

If your computer is not "ethernet ready" with a port for a twisted pair ("RJ-45") connector, then you will need to install a network card. Laptop computers will need to have a 10/100 Base-T PCMCIA card or similar external connector (make sure to mention to your salesperson the brand and model of computer you are connecting when purchasing a card). If you go with another brand, make sure it is Plug-and-Play capable . You should follow the installation and configuration instructions that come with your network card. It is your responsibility to have the card installed correctly.

Connecting your Computer to the Ethernet Port

You will need an ethernet cable (described above) long enough to reach from your computer to the wall jack in your room. The Willamette Store (503-370-6315) sells cables in a variety of lengths from 6 ft. to 20 ft. long.

Insert one end of the cable into the port on the back of your computer. Make sure the cable's connector audibly "clicks" upon insertion. Plug the other end of the cable into the wall jack, also listening for a "click".

Restart your computer. From the Start button, select Run, then type cmd and click OK. This will bring up a black DOS window. At the C:\> prompt, type ipconfig. Look for the IP Address; it should start with 158.104.

Configuring Windows 2000

The instructions in the following sections cover the Windows 2000 system properties, the network settings, and network adapter settings. Read all of the instructions carefully before making any changes. Have your Windows 2000 CD-ROM or installation diskettes handy; some installation procedures may require them. Once you have completed making the necessary changes, you will be prompted to restart Windows. The changes will not take affect until you have done so.

NETWORK SETTINGS

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.

  2. Open the Control Panel folder.

  3. Double-click on Network and Dial Up Connections.

  4. Double-click on Local Area Connection, select Properties.

  1. Under Connect Using, you should see the brand name and model number of your ethernet card. If your ethernet card is missing, you may need to install the appropriate drivers, which you should find on the diskette that came with your card.

  2. Under Components checked are used by this connection you should see:

    • Client for Microsoft Networks
    • Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

You should only see these two items - if any other items appear (especially AOL and Dialup adapters), uncheck the check-box next to them.

  1. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

  2. Click on Properties.

    • Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
    • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
    • Click OK.

  3. Click on OK in the Local Area Network Properties window.

  4. Click Close in the Local Area Network Status window. At this point, you may be prompted to restart your computer.
  1. On your desktop, right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Restart your computer.

Register Your Computer on the Network

  1. Start your Web browser (either Internet Explorer or Netscape).

  2. If everything is working properly, you will automatically open to the Willamette Network registration web page, no matter what URL you enter. (NOTE: if your computer previously ran the web browser, it is possible for it to pull up pages from a "cache" file. If this happens, click on the "Reload" or "Refresh" button.) Read this page, then click on "Next".

  3. You will be asked for a login name and password. This is the same login and password that you use to get your e-mail. If you do not yet have a Willamette network account, follow the link on the Willamette Network registration webpage to create one. Once you have completed your account creation, you will need to restart your web browser to get back to the Willamette Network page. Proceed with the rest of the instructions in this document.

  4. Once you have logged in, a page will appear welcoming you and asking for information. Fill in the information as prompted.

  5. You will be asked to read and agree to be bound by Willamette's Acceptable Use for Residential Computing document. If you wish, you can print this document, or obtain a printed copy from the document rack in the General Access Lab (Smullin 119). By clicking on the button you are binding yourself to the policies and acceptable uses whether or not you read the document! If you do not agree to the documents then you will need to contact WITS (Smullin 101 or x6004). Your network connection cannot be activated until you agree to be bound by this document.

  6. A page will appear confirming your registration.

  7. Restart your computer and your network connection will be fully operational.

Finishing Up

You should now be ready to access the internet or email from your room. Please keep this document for reference should something happen to your network connection during the school year.

The easiest way to check your Willamette email is to use Webmail. Open your web browser and go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/

If you are going to be using an e-mail client other than Webmail (such as Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
