Introduction

This document contains instructions for connecting a Macintosh computer running Mac OS 9 to the internet using BlitzNet, Willamette's wireless network. You will need:

This document assumes that you already have the appropriate hardware and software installed, and that you are familiar with Mac OS 9. If you need assistance, please call the WITS Help Desk at 503-370-6767.

If your Mac does not have a wireless card, you'll have to purchase and install one. Check the documentation that came with your computer for "AirPort" (the name of the wireless card used in Macintosh computers). The card must be configured properly before you will be able to connect. Also, you must be within the range of a wireless access point to complete the setup. Once this is done, you will be able to gain network access in any of the following wireless locations:

Getting Started

Connecting to the wireless network consists of the following steps:

Installing an AirPort card

If you had to purchase an AirPort card, simply follow the instructions that came with it.

Configuring AirPort

The following instructions cover using the AirPort Setup Assistant to setup your card and connect to Willamette's wireless network.

AIRPORT SETUP ASSISTANT

  1. Start the AirPort Setup Assistant (use Find on the Edit menu if you cannot locate the Assistant)..
  2. Select Setup your computer to use an existing wireless network.
  3. Click the right arrow to continue.
  4. If your AirPort card is properly installed, it will detect the signal from the access point.
  5. Click Go Ahead (your AirPort card will be configured automatically after a short delay).
  6. Click Connect Now.
  7. Your web browser should start automatically and you'll be taken to the "Welcome to Willamette's Wireless Network" screen.
  8. Read the screen, then click Next.
  9. Login using your Willamette network name and password.
  10. Complete the form (Computer type, manufacturer, and model).
  11. Click Next.
  12. Setup is complete. Restart your computer.

Finishing Up

You should now be able to run network programs such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. Please keep this document for reference should something happen to your network connection during the school year.

The easiest way to check your Willamette email is to use Webmail. Open your web browser and go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/

If you are going to be using an e-mail client other than Webmail (such as Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
