Getting Started

Connecting to the wireless network consists of the following steps:

Installing a network card

If your computer does not have a built-in wireless card, then you will need to install an external wireless card. WITS recommends (and the Willamette Bookstore carries) ORiNOCO wireless cards for laptop computers. Step-by-step instructions for installing and configuring the ORiNOCO wireless card can be found at http://www.willamette.edu/wits/resources/docs/network/wireless/orinoco.htm.

If you choose to go with another brand, it must be 802.11b compatible, and you should follow the installation and setup instructions that come with the card. It is your responsibility to have the card installed and configured correctly.

When you configure your wireless card for Willamette's network, you will be asked to supply a Network Name or SSID. This should be BlitzNet. If you do not enter this information correctly, your wireless connection will not work!

Configuring Windows 2000

The instructions in the following sections cover the Windows 2000 system properties, the network settings, and network adapter settings. Read all of the instructions carefully before making any changes. Have your Windows 2000 CD-ROM handy; some installation procedures may require it. You must be logged in as Administrator to alter your network settings. Once you have completed making the necessary changes, you will be prompted to restart Windows. The changes will not take effect until you have done so.

NETWORK SETTINGS

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Open the Control Panel folder.
  3. Double-click on Network and Dial Up Connections.
  4. Double-click on Local Area Connection, select Properties.
    • Under Connect Using you should see the brand name and model number of your wireless network card. If your network card is missing, you may need to install the appropriate drivers, which you should find on the diskette or CD-ROM that came with your card.
    • Under Components checked are used by this connection you should see Client for Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). You should only see these two things. If any other items appear, select them and click on Uninstall.
  5. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  6. Click on Properties.
  7. Click on OK in the Local Area Network Properties window.
  8. Click Close in the Local Area Network Status window. At this point, you may be prompted to restart your computer.

Register Your Computer on the Network

The final step is to register with the network. To do this:

    1. Start your Web browser.
    2. You will automatically open to the ResNet registration web page, no matter what URL you enter. (NOTE: if your computer previously ran the web browser, it is possible for it to pull up pages from a "cache" file. If this happens, click on the "Reload" or "Refresh" button.) Read this page, then click on "Next"
    3. You will be asked for a login name and password. This is the same login and password that you use to get your e-mail.
    4. Once you have logged in, a page will appear welcoming you and asking for information. Fill in the info as prompted.
    5. You will be asked to read and agree to be bound by Willamette's Acceptable Use for Residential Computing document. If you wish, you can print this document, or obtain a printed copy from the document rack in the General Access Lab (Smullin 119). By clicking on the button you are binding yourself to the policies and acceptable uses whether you actually read the document or not! If you do not agree to the documents then you will need to contact WITS (Smullin 101 or x6004). Your network connection cannot be activated until you agree to be bound by this document.
    6. A page will appear confirming your registration. Restart your computer and your network connection will be fully operational.

Finishing Up

You should now be able to run network programs such as Ewan and Netscape. Please keep this document for reference should something happen to your network connection during the school year.

The easiest way to check your Willamette email is to use Webmail. Open your web browser and go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/

If you are going to be using an e-mail client other than Webmail (such as Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
