Guide to the Pine Electronic Mail Program

Release 4.21

Document #110-119

Date: 03/03

Abstract: Electronic Mail is a system for sending messages or files to the accounts of other computer users. The sender and recipients may be on the same network or half a world apart. Pine is one of the electronic mail programs used at Willamette University. This guide introduces version 4.21 and covers many of its features. Familiarity with using SSH to log into Pine is assumed.

Introduction: Electronic mail works very much like regular postal mail. Every user on the network has a private mailbox where mail is kept until deleted by the user. Like regular postal mail you must have an address to send a message. If the mail system cannot deliver a message it will make every attempt to return it, but it is possible for mis-addressed messages to get lost somewhere along the way.
