Date: 03/03 |
Introduction: The sent-mail folder is where a copy of each message you send is placed, in case you want to refer back to what you've sent. At the beginning of every month Pine will prompt you to create a sent-mail folder with the name of the past month and clear the sent-mail folder for messages you are going to send during the new month. See also: Frequently Asked Questions about saving sent mail.
To specify a sent-mail folder that will automatically save your outgoing messages, do the following:
Note: To delete a previously entered folder so that outgoing mail is not copied and saved, delete the folder name, leaving the field blank.
By saving your outgoing mail you keep a record of what you've said. You can refer to this record as needed. Also, you can forward messages to additional people, or you can forward to the original recipient(s) as a reminder. Occasionally, you might need to find an electronic address from one of these messages, especially if the original message you received was deleted.
With the exception of your INBOX, all mail folders are saved on backup tapes made each night. For some people, this saved (and therefor searchable) information represents an invasion of privacy. While nothing in electronic mail is truly private, you can prevent the archiving of your outgoing mail by not specifying a "fcc" folder to save it to.
You can, on a message-by-message basis, save a copy to a particular folder.
While you are addressing a message (i.e. while you're in the "header") press Control-R for Rich Header. Three new fields appear, including "Fcc:". You can enter the name of any folder (including a new folder) into this field, and a copy of your outgoing message will be saved there. You will have to repeat this process for each outgoing message you wish to save.
Shortcut: You can "cc" yourself on any message, sending a copy of your outgoing mail to your INBOX.
