Document #112 |
Date: 03/03 |
Abstract:This document covers the use of Pine's folder feature. The Folder feature is central to most activities in the Pine mail system. All messages sent and received are stored in a folder, and newsgroups can be presented as folders. The Folde r list is accessible from the Main Menu or from other sections where you might want to view stored mail or newsgroups. Familiarity with the use of Pine (Document #110) is assumed.
Contents:
Introduction Pine automatically saves all messages in a mail folder. Every message is stored in a folder, and every folder has a name. As soon as you start using Pine, two folders are created by Pine for you: INBOX and saved-messages. You can also create new folders with meaningful names to categorize your various messages. One folder that you may want to create is a folder for your sent mail. See "Creating a Sent Mail Folder in Pine" (Document #112a).
When you use the Folder Index command in the Pine Main Menu, the list displays the contents of a folder, known as the current folder. To see contents of another folder, you must make it the current folder. The name of the current folder is listed at the top of the Pine screen.
NOTE: Messages can be deleted, saved, and undeleted from any folder using the same process.
The INBOX folder is where all your new mail is delivered. The inbox is the default current folder. That is, each time Pine is executed, you are automatically reading the inbox. You may leave all your messages in the inbox, but for better organization, you will want to either delete these messages or save (move) them to other folders. (See "saved-messages folder" below.)
The saved-messages folder is the folder used by default when you "save" a message in the inbox.
The Folder list is where you can see a list of all available folders. You can change the current folder, add a new folder, or delete an existing folder. To access the Folder list from the Pine Main Menu:
NOTE: If the folder you are leaving has items marked for deletion you may be prompted with a message asking if you really want to delete them. If you type y the deletions will become permanent. To save items from deletion enter n. You will still change folders, but the items marked for deletion will be held until you return to the folder, even if you quit Pine.
Create a New Folder from the Folder Screen
NOTE: It is not absolutely necessary to do this, because you may create a new folder by saving a message to it. (See below).
Saving a Message to a Folder From Message Text or Folder Index, you can save a message to any folder. Pine has already created a saved message folder for your use. You can create other folders. The message that is saved is the one highlighted in the Folder Index screen or the one on display in Message Text.
