Responding to Newsgroup Articles

Read the Standards for Willamette Newsgroups section before posting to any newsgroups.

• With the article displayed on the screen or selected from the article list, type R for Reply.
  • You will be prompted with "Include original message in Reply?"
• Type Y to include the original message as quoted material, or type N to exclude the original message.
  • You will be prompted with "Follow-up to news group(s), Reply via email to author or Both?"
• Type F to post your reply to the entire newsgroup.
• Type R to send mail only to the author of the message.
• Type B for both an email reply and a newsgroup posting.

  You will see the Pine compose screen, with an additional line in the header (Newsgrps:).

• Type your message.
• Press ^X to send.
  • You will be prompted with "Send message"?
• Type Y for Yes or N for No.
  • You will be prompted with "Posted message may to to thousands of readers. Really Post?"

    Type Y for Yes or N for No.

Posting a New Article to a Newsgroup

To start a new subject within a newsgroup you post a message with a new subject line.

• If you are not already reading that newsgroup's messages, select the newsgroup from the News-Collection section of the Folder List screen.
• Press C for Compose.
  • You will be prompted with "Post to current newsgroup (newsgroup name)?"
• Type Y for Yes or N for No. 

  You will see a normal Pine compose screen. Add something to the Subject line.

• Type your message.
• Press ^X to send.
  • You will be prompted with "Send message"?
• Type Y for Yes or N for No.
  • You will be prompted with "Posted message may to to thousands of readers. Really Post?"

  Type Y for Yes or N for No.
