BlitzNet
Willamette's wireless network

General Information

WITS began installing wireless access points on the Willamette campus in Summer 2001. We plan to continue expanding BlitzNet over the course of the next two years.

Currently, wireless access is available in most academic buildings and common areas such as Eaton Hall, Collins Science Center, Hatfield Library, University Center, Goudy Commons, Writing and Research Center, Montag Center, Atkinson Graduate School of Management, School of Education, and College of Law. For more information about where wireless access is available, please view our Wireless Coverage Map.

What do I need to connect to BlitzNet?

You must have:

  • A laptop computer running Windows 98/ME/2000/XP or Mac OS 8/9/X.
  • A wireless network card.

WITS recommends the ORiNOCO Silver wireless card. If you choose to go with another brand, you should look for a PCMCIA wireless card that is compliant with the IEEE 802.11b wireless standard. Some newer laptops come with built-in wireless; this is okay as long as the wireless card uses the 802.11b standard.

Willamette's wireless network does not support 802.11a.

Once I have these items, how do I connect?

WITS provides installation instructions for the ORiNOCO wireless card (for Windows 95/98/Me/2000 only - no Windows XP).

We also provide instructions for configuring your operating system for our wireless network. These instructions can be found at:
http://www.willamette.edu/wits/resources/docs/network/wireless/

Can I print from the wireless network?

Yes. WITS has developed Web Printing, which allows you to send a document to a 'virtual print queue' on the web. Once your document is in the queue, you need to log in to the Web Printing Website to send your document to an actual printer. There are several printers to choose from, located in various buildings around campus.

To set up Web Printing on your computer, check out our instructions at:
