Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, or Netscape 7.0
or higher (both available for free

Netscape Mail, Outlook Express, or OS X Mail (if
you prefer to use Webmail,
then your web browser will suffice - no additional
software is needed)
Anti-Virus
Software
Norton AntiVirus or McAfee VirusScan (WITS will
provide Norton AntiVirus to all resident students,
free of charge. Non-resident students can purchase
Norton AntiVirus through the Willamette

AppleWorks
Macintosh computers come with AppleWorks. While
this is a good software product, the accepted
standard at Willamette is Microsoft Office. Although
you may be able to get by using AppleWorks, it
is recommend that you purchase Microsoft Office
(Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Microsoft
Works
Some Windows computers come with Microsoft Works.
This product includes Microsoft Word, and a spreadsheet
that is compatible with Microsoft Excel, but Works
does not include a presentation package like PowerPoint.
Excel and PowerPoint, along with Word, are both
included in Microsoft Office, which is the accepted
standard at Willamette.
Corel
WordPerfect
WordPerfect is still being used by some staff
and faculty in the College of Law, but elsewhere
on campus, the standard word processor is Microsoft
Word. Word Perfect is not installed in any of
the campus computer labs (except the Law labs,
accessible only by Law students, staff, and faculty).
Net2Phone
Net2Phone
is a company offering software and services that
allow a computer on the Internet to be used to
make phone calls at costs that compare favorably
with normal long distance rates. The only problem
is that their software is incompatible with network
security policies at the University.
We
use a firewall
to protect our network from attacks originating
outside of the University's network. The firewall
is set up to allow users within the University
to open different kinds of connections to computers
outside the university, but it prevents anyone
outside the university from opening a connection
with a machine on campus, except for specific
machines that must be accessible (e.g., our web
server and e-mail server).
At
first glance, it might seem that using Net2Phone's
products to make a phone call from inside the
University to outside the University would be
fine. But a completed Net2Phone call actually
involves three underlying network connections,
one of which originates at Net2Phone's server
and goes back to the computer initiating the call.
It is this latter connection that our firewall
prevents. Without it, Net2Phone's services cannot
be used on the campus network.
Network
Games
Any game that requires a user from off campus
to make a connection to a computer on campus will
not work properly due to firewall
restrictions.
Because
WITS does not recommend file sharing, we also
do not recommend games that require you to turn
on file sharing in order to play over the network.
