Health and Wellness Matters

Immunizations

Oregon State Law (ORS 333-19-080) requires all entering University students to show proof of two doses of measles vaccine (MMRs). International students are required to have a Tuberculosis (TB) screening within one year of admission. You will receive future mailings with information explaining the state's requirement for immunizations and health record forms. Students who have not fulfilled these state requirements are not permitted to attend class.

Student Insurance

All students who are half time or more are required to carry health insurance. Student health insurance is billed automatically through the business office at the beginning of each academic year. Students who have other coverage may elect to sign a waiver to opt out of the student insurance plan. This waiver must be submitted within 10 days from the first day of class each year. Go to Bishop Wellness Center: Health Services for this waiver.

The current coverage period for the 2009-10 academic year is August 15, 2009-August 15, 2010. The rate for the student insurance plan for the 2009-2010 school year is a 2 tier rate based on age. The rate is based on your age on August 15, 2009. Students age 24 and under will pay $475 per year and students over 24 will pay $720 per year. The rate is not pro-rated for students who begin in the spring or mid-year.

Dependant insurance is also available. Information about insurance coverage for dependents

You are welcome to visit the Bishop Wellness Center web pages for more information about all the health and wellness services provided to students including Counseling services, Disability and Learning services and the Health Services Center, in addition to Immunizations and Student Insurance.

Suggested Summer Reading

We have received a number of inquiries about how best to prepare for the beginning of law school.  Here are a few suggestions:

First, you might find the transition to law school easier if you read about the law school experience ahead of time.  In addition, reading anything that puts the law and the role of the lawyer into context and helps to familiarize you with the terminology will be helpful.  To these ends, one of our professors has provided a suggested reading list.

Second, you can prepare for law school by having a restful summer and getting your affairs in order eliminating as many sources of stress as possible. This might include matters such as letting your family and friends know that you probably will not have as much time to spend with them during the semester when you are studying, making sure your computer is functioning well, and arranging your finances including reducing debt and expenses wherever possible.

Computers

Laptops are not required for our law students; however, they can be a definite asset in and out of the classroom. Students use their laptops for note taking in class, registration and research as well as taking end of the semester exams. The College of Law is completely wired. That is, the entire building is connected via fiber cables and with wireless technology. All faculty and administrative offices and all student carrels are network ready. FAQ information sheet regarding recommended computer specifications

If you are interested in purchasing the Willamette Store's recommended laptop, you are welcome to visit the Willamette Store computer shop website. You are not under any obligation to purchase this laptop. Other laptops will be sufficient, provided that they meet the recommended specifications.

Parking

Parking is available in designated Willamette University parking lots without a parking permit during orientation week but all other parking regulations remain in effect. As of the first week of September, parking permits will be required and Campus Safety will issue citations to cars parked in Willamette University parking lots without a parking permit.

Students may purchase a parking permit online after obtaining a student identification card during orientation.

Housing

Most law students live off campus, as there are a limited number of apartments that are reserved on-campus in the University Apartments, Haseldorf Apartments and Kaneko Commons for students from the College of Law and the Atkinson Graduate School of Management.

The Office of Residential Services maintains an updated listing of the availability of on campus housing. Our current 2009-10 Guide to Moving to Salem (PDF) may prove helpful in your search for a local area apartment and or property management services.

Additional postings for housing and apartments are located on a bulletin board in the first floor College of Law student lounge. The Office of Admission for the College of Law compiles a rental information packet that is updated approximately every two weeks throughout the spring and summer months prior to orientation.
