Student Teaching Resources and FormsMaster of Arts in Teaching

During the Student Teaching semester for both the full-time and part-time Aspire programs, pre-service teachers must be in their school for the entire teacher contract day for the entire spring school semester. All students must complete a two-five week work sample, typically due prior to spring break. Supervising teachers are expected to meet at a regularly scheduled time each week with their Pre-service teacher to discuss teaching. Pre-service teachers are expected to perform the typical responsibilities of a teacher, including attending faculty meetings, bus duty, etc. as appropriate.

At the early childhood and elementary authorization levels students are actively involved in the classroom throughout Student Teaching. Pre-service teachers typically teach a unit or take on the math time, for example during the early part of the semester. They gradually take on more responsibility until they take on full responsibility for the entire school day for three weeks. This time of full responsibility may or may not coincide with their 2-5 week work sample. After Pre-service teachers' full responsibility period they return to active involvement in the class.

At the middle and high school levels of authorization Pre-service teachers take on full responsibility for half of a teacher contract teaching load, typically 3 periods. Pre-service teachers usually have full responsibility for the classroom beginning with the first day of the semester until the last day of the semester. During the first two weeks, supervising teachers are not in the classroom so that the Pre-service teachers can establish themselves as the teacher and create the environment for learning that they desire. Supervising teachers should check in often with their pre-service teachers during this time.

If a pre-service teacher struggles during their student teaching, a plan of assistance is often created to help support him or her and set clear expectations.
