Edward G. Whipple

Vice President for Student Affairs

Specialty: Teaching, Community Building, Leadership, Residential Life, Student/Faculty Liaison, Multicultural Affairs

Born and raised in Oregon, Ed Whipple attended South Salem High School and attributes his success to his education. Whipple earned a bachelor’s degree from Willamette in 1974, a master's from Northwestern University and later his doctorate from Oregon State University. Whipple is also part of a family legacy, stepping into a role originally held by his father, Jerry Whipple, who became Willamette’s first vice president of campus life in 1967. After spending time in France, Ed Whipple came back to Oregon to share his vast experience as a high school teacher, higher education administrator and student affairs leader. He emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and the development of strong relationships across campus. He also believes in providing opportunities for community members to support each other and be engaged in the life of the university. As vice president, Whipple has administrative oversight for all Student Affairs offices and departments, including Athletics, Campus Recreation, Community Service Learning,  Bishop Wellness Center, Multicultural Affairs, Housing and Community Life, and Student Activities.
