Happy New Year, Bearcats!

Resolve to make the most of our amazing 25,000+ strong network in 2016. Alumni volunteers are hard at work planning events and providing opportunities for us to connect, learn, celebrate, network, and experience the value of our shared community.

Also, be sure to check out the Alumni Association's refreshed website, which has been streamlined to be more user-friendly. We'd like your feedback! Send your suggestions to alumni@willamette.edu! Oh, and if you're an Instagrammer, use #WillametteAlumni and your photos will appear at the bottom of the WUAA homepage.

Always a Bearcat!

Next Friday, Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator and lecturer Leonard Pitts Jr. will visit Willamette to deliver a speech about Martin Luther King and his impact on the Civil Rights Movement. The title of Pitts' speech, "In a Single Garment of Destiny," refers to a passage from King's "Letter From Birmingham Jail," which defends the strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism.

Erin Gangstad As an intern for the Woodland Park Zoo's event department, Erin Gangstad '16 (pictured above, on right) had the chance to gain professional experience while utilizing her civic communication and media studies major. She spent her summer assisting the department with the planning, logistics, and execution of various onsite events. Gangstad obtained hands-on experience with a wide range of event types, including fundraisers, weddings, promotional days, and concerts. She also had the opportunity to learn more about working with large scale non-profit organizations.

"Spending my summer at the Woodland Park Zoo was an incredibly fun and educational experience," says Gangstad. "Working on large scale events like Jungle Party, a donor dinner that garnered nearly 1.4 million dollars for the zoo, forced me to think on my feet, take initiative, and grow as an individual."

Gangstad's internship provided her with important skills for the public and media relations industry, which she hopes to enter after graduation.

This is where you come in.
