Zachery Brown serves as an Assistant Director of Admission for the College of Arts & Sciences. In his role, Zach works directly with assisting students throughout the undergraduate enrollment process. He also serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Undergraduate Admission and partnering Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). In addition, he collaborates with university partners as the main contact point for questions related to the dual degree opportunities available to prospective Willamette University students.

Zach received a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in English and Medieval Studies from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, a fellow Colleges That Change Lives school located in his home state. Zach is also a first generation college graduate and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Why Willamette?

I have always been interested in the Pacific Northwest, and Willamette University provides a similar educational setting to my own alma mater. So, when I was looking to move out of my home state, it felt like a natural fit and I quickly fell in love with the people and community I found here. Plus, the proximity to both a major city in Portland and some truly stunning PNW nature was a huge bonus!

Favorite High School or College Class or Subject?

Hunting for Dracula! I took this class as part of a study abroad experience traveling throughout England and Romania during my senior year of college. Reading Dracula while simultaneously learning about the history of the places that inspired the novel was truly remarkable and I can't recommend studying abroad enough!

Something You Learned in College You Still Use?

I was a theatre student throughout college, and I use the confidence I gained in my voice and being able to speak and present in front of others nearly every day of my life.

Memorable/Favorite High School or College Co-Curricular Activity

I loved finding ways to explore my creative energy in the various extracurricular activities across both high school and college. Some favorites include dungeons & dragons clubs, literary magazines, and any and all ways to get involved with theatre.

Proudest Accomplishment to Date

My proudest accomplishment has to be the community of friends and chosen family that I have cultivated throughout my life. I wouldn't be the person I am today without their support and I love that I get to support them in kind.

Favorite Book

The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neil Gaiman

I actually have a quote from this novel tattooed on me, and I think it showcases a wonderful story about feeling left out and how to find community in a world that may not want you to.
