Working with your academic advisor and the Office of International Education (OIE) you can plan a study abroad experience that fulfills your academic and personal goals.

Why study abroad?

A study abroad program allows you to:

  • Examine historical resources and policy issues in an international context
  • Gain a comparative cross-cultural perspective on the interaction of people and their past
  • Enhance your intercultural communication and improve language skills
  • Broaden your world view and deepen your understanding of yourself
  • Prepare for life after college by becoming a globally engaged citizen

How will study abroad count toward my major? Will it take me longer to graduate?

With planning, you can study abroad and graduate on time. An OIE advisor can help you to find a program that matches your academic needs and helps you to meet your personal goals and interests as well. Your academic advisor will help you to plan for study abroad, what classes to take, and determine how many credits you may apply toward the major.

The History department actively encourages study abroad and works with students to make it possible to fit with their major requirements.  Many students take one or two credits in the major, and many choose to supplement with a selection of general education and elective classes. These offerings vary widely based on your program and your individual degree requirements.

When should I study abroad?

Programs are offered during the fall or spring semester, during the summer, or for a full academic year. Make an appointment with your academic advisor to plan study abroad in the fall of your sophomore year.

History majors typically study abroad as juniors, either in the fall or spring semester, but study abroad is open to students in their sophomore through senior years. Summer programs are open to students at all levels, unless otherwise noted.

Can I afford to study abroad?

Yes! Willamette-sponsored semester programs are comparable in cost to being on campus for a semester and most forms of financial aid can be applied. See the OIE website for more details about program costs and additional expenses to consider.

Scholarships for study abroad are available and can also be found on the OIE website. It is critical to begin to researching scholarships early, even before you apply for study abroad, as requirements and deadlines are often far in advance of your time spent abroad.

How should I choose a program?

Just as you spent time researching colleges before deciding on Willamette, you will want to spend time investigating programs abroad to ensure a good fit. With this in mind, the OIE offers extensive resources to find an institute and location suitable for your interests and needs.

Your research should take the following into consideration:

  • Whether there are classes that meet your academic needs.
  • Your personal goals for the experience and which programs will help you to meet them.
  • Which programs offer support services you may need during your time there.

History majors should consult their academic advisor about the courses they take abroad, what opportunities they can find, and how their experience can shape their senior capstone project.
