men-on-boats.jpgWU Theatre will be auditioning both our fall and spring productions this August.  Please follow the information below to participate in these auditions.  If you are a theatre major, minor and/or scholarship holder, you are required to audition.*

Preview on Oct. 29, 2020. Performances run Oct. 30 - Nov. 15, 2020, Thurs - Sun.

  • Rehearsals: Aug. 31 through Oct. 28, 2020. Monday - Friday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm.
  • Saturday rehearsal added beginning Oct. 10, 2020, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
  • No Sunday rehearsals.

Preview on Feb. 25, 2021. Performances run Feb. 26 - March 7, 2021, Thurs - Sun.

  • Rehearsals: Jan. 11 through Feb. 24, 2021. Monday - Friday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, and Saturdays 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
  • No Sunday rehearsals.

Friday, August 28, 2020: General auditions

  • 6:20 pm:  Click on the Zoom invite link. It is important to link with Zoom at or before 6:20 pm.
  • You will be placed in the waiting room where our Production Manager, Sophia Leonard, will assign you approximate times for your audition.
  • When your approximate time arrives, you will be moved into the audition “room." You will see both Professors Cole and Coromel.
  • Please be sure that your phone, laptop, or tablet is set for a medium shot (about waist up). Introduce yourself and your two monologues.
  • Pull back from your camera to a full body shot and begin your audition.
  • Don’t worry -- The directors will talk you through everything you need to know once you are in the room.

    Saturday, August 29, 2020: Callbacks
  • 11:00 am: Callbacks for both productions.
    Callbacks will follow a similar Zoom format as the auditions.
  • You will be placed in breakout rooms to read/rehearse with your scene partner with sides of both scripts.
  • Sides will be made available sometime during week prior to general auditions.

As listed before, all auditionees and technicians working with the show must fill out this linked form.

Please prepare and memorize two contrasting monologues from contemporary, published plays, not to exceed a combined total of two (2) minutes.

  • Monologues must be from published plays written for theatre.
  • You should have read the entire play and have a thorough understanding of the character you are playing. Please contact sgalexander@willamette.edu if you need an electronic copy.
  • Choose a character that is within your age range.
  • The monologue should be realistic (no dialects and/or character voices).
  • The monologues should not exceed one minute in length.
  • Monologues must be fully memorized.
  • Original material is not acceptable.

ABOUT THE PLAYS

The Memo

Václav Havel's play is political, at least implicitly. The play concerns the tribulations of Josef Gross, the managing director of an organization encumbered by a bureaucracy that is out of control. The introduction of an artificial language, Ptydepe, is supposed to streamline office communications, but only makes it worse. Havel’s satire is full of irony about the kind of jobs created by communism as well as the constant surveillance by office spies. The importance of conformity to keep one’s job is seen as relatively common  The play was born out of the experience of Czech communism but its application is universal.

Casting: 12-15 roles available, which will include various gender identities not implied in written text.

A Bright New Boise

In the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho, someone is summoning The Rapture. Will, who has fled his rural hometown after a scandal at his Evangelical church, comes to the Hobby Lobby, not only for employment but also to rekindle a relationship with Alex, his brooding teenage son, whom he gave up for adoption several years ago. Alex works there along with Leroy, his adopted brother and protector, and Anna, a hapless young woman who reads bland fiction but hopes for dramatic endings. As their manager, foul-mouthed Pauline, tries ceaselessly to find order (and profit) in the chaos of small business, these lost souls of the Hobby Lobby confront an unyielding world through the beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith. Samuel D. Hunter's A Bright New Boise is an earnest comedy about the meager profits of modern faith.

* Significant involvement in each main stage productions each semester is required of all majors, minors and scholarship students. If you received your scholarship based on an acting audition, you must audition for all main stage shows. If you interviewed as a design/tech student, you are welcome but not required to audition. Significant involvements include acting or a major contribution to technical aspects of the production. The faculty will assign students their production roles. It is the student's responsibility to check with the Production Stage Manager to confirm their assignments to crew positions.
