Biography
Tim Stapleton has been a professional Scenic Designer for thirty years. He came to the Pacific Northwest in 1986, and has since designed scenery for several Theatre Companies in the area. He was the resident designer for Boarshead: Michigan Public Theatre in Lansing, Michigan for eight seasons.
Tim Stapleton has worked with the Regional Arts & Culture Council in Portland as a liaison to Social Services, and has taught Theatre courses in Scenic Design, Scenic Painting, Costume History and Design and Introduction to Theatre for Willamette University, Central Washington University, Lewis & Clark College, and Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.
Tim Stapleton has designed Night of the Iguana, Never the Sinner, Master Class, Three Days of Rain, Indiscretions and Breaking the Code for Artists Repertory Theatre. He also has designed for Storefront Theatre, Portland’s Civic Theatre, Triangle Productions, Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company, Portland Actor’s Conservatory, Miracle Theatre, Profile Theatre Project, the Oregon Zoo and Oregon Public Broadcasting. He has been a guest designer for The Pacific Dance Ensemble and Red Octopus Theatre Company in Newport, Oregon, The Apollo Theatre in Chicago, The Riverwalk Theatre in Okemos, Michigan, Wenatchee Children’s Theatre in Washington State, and the Mariko Dance Theatre in Kyoto, Japan.
Tim Stapleton’s paintings and photographs have been shown at the Mina Dresden Gallery in San Francisco, the Lansing Art Gallery in Lansing, Michigan, the Huntington Galleries in Huntington, West Virginia, Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, The California Institute of Integral Studies, and with the Kentucky Arts Commission in Louisville, Kentucky.
Tim Stapleton‘s short play, Blue Diamond, was produced by Artists Repertory Theatre as a part of their Spotlight festival. His short story, Finding Eric, was published in an anthology by Inkwater Press in the winter of 2007, and in the spring of 2008, he won an Honorable Mention in the Mountain Heritage Literary Festival at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee for his prose piece The Reunion. Finishing the Quilt, a short essay accompanied by two photographs was recently published in Alltopia, a literary zine and in Spool Needlearts Quarterly. In the spring of 2011, his piece bundle (a painting with text), will be included in a journal called Mission at Tenth: hieroglyphics, sign and symbol, published by The California Institute of Integral Studies.
In June of 2009, Tim Stapleton mounted a project at the IFCC in Portland, which included photographs, paintings, and a performance piece called Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. He has also written a soon to be published manuscript titled BLACK RIBBON ROADS: a journey out of Appalachia.
Tim Stapleton has four Drammy awards from the Portland Area Theatre Alliance for his stage designs, and a Fellowship from The National Endowment for the Arts. He has an MFA in Creative Inquiry from the New College of California, and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Morehead State University.
