For language students in Japanese and Chinese: 7 awards, $200 each.
For non-language Asian studies courses: 5 awards, $200 each.
To be recommended by the professor and reviewed by the core faculty. Cultural classes need one term paper to be on file. Language classes need the grades/class ranking to be on file. Non-language awards are to encourage students in any class to work on Asian and/or Asian American topics. The topic must be derived from a class and must be based on fieldwork in the local community. Students may apply for a grant on a related topic, with a faculty advisor.
Description:
The annual award for the “Excellence in an Asian Studies Course” is established by the Center for Asian Studies, with the purpose of encouraging students in Asian Studies courses to be creative and critical, and to achieve excellence both in and outside of the classroom. This award is nominated by the instructors of the Asian Studies courses at the end of the academic year, evaluated by the Asian Studies faculty, and announced in late April. The basic criteria include achievement in a course, independent research, the student’s GPA, and contributions to a course. The award is two hundred dollars with a certificate. Seven awards are for Chinese and Japanese language courses, and five awards are for non-language Asian Studies courses.
Nomination:
Each Asian Studies Faculty nominates two to three candidates.
