Mark O. Hatfield (July 12, 1922 - August 7, 2011) graduated from Salem High School (now North Salem High School) in 1940 and Willamette University in 1943. At Willamette, he lost his only election, for student body president. After earning a Masters degree from Stanford, he returned to Willamette as an Assistant Professor of Politics and later as Dean of Students. Hatfield served 2 terms as Oregon Governor and five terms as U.S. Senator from Oregon. In 1970, with Senator George McGovern, Hatfield co-sponsored the Hatfield-McGovern amendment calling for a complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam. During the 1980's, Hatfield co-sponsored nuclear freeze legislation with Senator Edward Kennedy. In 1990, he was one of only 2 Republicans to vote against authorizing military action against Iraq. In 1995, Hatfield was the only Republican to vote against the proposed constitutional amend that would have forced a balanced budget and his was the deciding vote preventing the passage of the bill. After his retirement, he taught at Willamette University, George Fox, Portland State University, and Lewis & Clark College.
