careers-header

At graduation, Willamette University Art majors are prepared to continue on in a variety of fields, from working as a professional studio artist or an educator to jobs in government or advertising.  Excellent visual and verbal communication skills prepare students to work in virtually any field.  Our graduates have gone on to become visual artists, museum and gallery exhibition designers, lawyers, educators, graphic designers, and animators, among many other fields.

Below are a number of websites offering useful information to those seeking a career in art:

  • Alliance for Artist Communities
This organization is based in Portland (Oregon) and has a great web site listing artist residencies throughout the United States.
  • Art Deadlines List
This site offers a FREE monthly emailed newsletter (a premium/paid is also available) providing information about juried exhibitions/competitions, call for entries/proposals/papers, jobs, internships, writing and photo contests, scholarships, residencies, design and architecture competitions, auditions, fellowships, casting calls, tryouts, grants, festivals, funding, financial aid, and other opportunities (including some that take place on the web) for artists, art educators and art students of all ages.
  • ArtDeadline.com
This subscription-based resource enables the viewer to search for information on visual arts deadlines, funding opportunities, internet art agent careers, education deadlines, work in the performing arts, obtain residencies, and a number of other categories of interest. The database of income and exhibition opportunities for artists is especially large and robust.
  • International Association of Residential Arts Centers and Networks
A web site listing artist residencies around the world. A bit difficult to navigate, but useful.
  • Museum Employment Resources Center (MERC)
This venerable site offers job-seekers the ability to post a job announcement, place a resume online, investigate museums studies programs, and obtain information on cultural resources. The strength of this site, however, lies in being able to examine current employment listings. The positions are cited in a menu-style format and include Directorships of museums, Curator/Collections Management, Exhibit Design/Construction, Internships/Fellowships, and Museum Store/Retail.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook for Visual Artists
The compilation of information at this site, derived from the 2000-2001 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, comes courtesy of the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. The nature of the work in the visual arts field, working conditions, job outlook, earnings, and sources of additional information are examples of menu entries at this cyber location.
