Cinema Studies at Willamette introduces students to the construction of cinematic works and traditions. It provides students with critical tools necessary to make informed judgments about the visual representations they encounter, and it teaches students to critically examine the roles film and visual media play in our own lives.
The cinema studies major is well suited to contribute to the critical social engagement that the liberal arts seek to foster. It also prepares students for career opportunities or advanced study in filmmaking, non-print journalism, and media criticism.
Starting in the fall of 2018, Film Studies
will become Cinema Studies
The change updates and streamlines the program, and allows students to choose an area of concentration.
Current students will have the option to continue the current Film Studies major or to elect the new Cinema Studies major. See the Catalog of Study Policy.
Students who wish to declare a major in Cinema Studies before Fall 2018 should give their completed major declaration form directly to Mary Collins at the Registrar's office. The major will not be in the catalog until Fall 18, but the declaration will be kept ready until then, and will show up as soon as the new major goes live.
For more information about the new program, see the Resources page.
