Data Science Student

Upcoming Programs

Willamette will expand its data science offerings in fall 2020 to give students the knowledge and skills they need to excel in a rapidly growing field.

The university will change the data science major from a BA to a BS to reflect a robust curriculum developed specifically for data science. Students will benefit from the breadth of Willamette’s undergraduate offerings and the strengths of its graduate courses in business analytics.

The university also will launch an MS in data science and an innovative BS/MS program. Highly focused students will be able to complete the BS/MS in four years.

Data science majors interested in general management can take advantage of Willamette’s 3+2 program, which will allow them to complete their BS in data science and their MBA in five years.

Here’s an overview of the programs that are scheduled to be offered in fall 2020:

BS in Data Science

Data science majors will combine their undergraduate studies with graduate coursework at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, giving them access to professors and practitioners who are experts in business analytics.

Degree Requirements

  • Introduction to Programming
  • Statistical Learning with R
  • Fundamentals of Data Science
  • Math for Data Science
  • Machine Learning
  • Data Engineering
  • Three electives (at least one 400 level or above)
  • Senior Capstone

MS in Data Science

Graduate students will learn from professors and classmates with a range of backgrounds, exposing them to multiple data science environments and applications as they earn an MS in one year of study. Beginning with a shared base of data science fundamentals, students will have a chance to focus their advanced studies in specific areas such as data privacy, visualization, marketing analytics and finance.

In the graduate capstone, students will propose, plan and execute an actual data science project, integrating all of the core skills learned throughout the program and developing a portfolio piece that can help with their career aspirations.

Students may complete their capstone project in their second term of study on campus. Alternately, if they wish to make their project part of an industry internship at another location — or if they simply want to take more time to develop their ideas — they may undertake this work in the summer following their MS coursework at no extra charge.

Degree Requirements

  • Fundamentals of Data Science
  • Practical Applications of Python for Data Science
  • Machine Learning
  • Data Engineering
  • Four electives
  • Graduate Capstone Project
