Dr. Katherine Skovira joins Willamette University as Zeller Chair of Opera Studies and Director of Dramatic Vocal Arts in the Department of Music in the College of Liberal Arts. A contemporary music vocalist and specialist, Dr. Skovira performs masterworks of 21st- and 20th-century works with many of the world’s leading contemporary music artists, orchestras and festivals, under the artistic direction of Sir Simon Rattle, Maestro Lorin Maazel, and Barbara Hannigan and with the Lucerne Festival Academy, Bard Music Festival, and Aspen Music Festival.
Skovira serves as Artistic Director of contemporary music ensemble, SoundLAB, previously the Barnes Ensemble, in Philadelphia. Her focus is thoughtful curation of instrumental, chamber, operatic and lyric theatre performance as a collaborative and reflective living art form. Skovira has collaborated with numerous composers and institutional partners, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, American Philosophical Society, American Composers Forum, University of Pennsylvania, and the Barnes Foundation. She holds degrees in voice and vocal pedagogy from Cornell University (B.A.), Westminster Choir College (M.M.), and the University of Minnesota (D.M.A.).
